Arrows passes scrutineering but needs cash
Arrows has passed a major hurdle in its quest to compete in this weekend's British Grand Prix at Silverstone by passing scrutineering this morning (Friday), but still has to convince engine supplier Cosworth to allow it to run in practice
The team missed scrutineering at 16.00 BST yesterday (Thursday), but was given an extension to allow it a chance to meet today's deadline. It passed that hurdle but the cars failed to appear in the opening free practice session.
Arrows is understood to owe Cosworth almost £3million, and is also facing another court case from former driver Jos Verstappen, who was dropped before the start of the season in favour of Heinz-Harald Frentzen. Ford insiders have said that the payment has not yet been paid and that the engines won't be allowed to run until money changes hands.
"He has engines to scrutineer but not to practice," said Niki Lauda, who oversees Cosworth's interests in Formula 1, yesterday. "I have done everything I could do in my power to extend his payment schedule."
Arrows boss Tom Walkinshaw is believed to be planning a deal to sell Arrows' rights to its F1 revenues to Red Bull energy drink boss and current sponsor Dieter Mateschitz, who wants to set-up an 'All-American' grand prix team.
Walkinshaw also had to face the FIA this morning to explain why he missed yesterday's press conference.
