Alonso wants more from qualifying

World champion Fernando Alonso reckons his Renault team must adopt race strategies that will allow him to fight for pole position

Alonso is yet to start from the front row of the grid this year, with a third place in Australia being his best starting position. Despite that, the Spaniard has gone on to win two races while he has finished second in the other two.

The Renault driver believes, however, that he and his team should improve their qualifying performances in order to avoid trouble in the future.

"Having favoured the race compared to qualifying has so far demonstrated to be a winning strategy, but I can't deny that starting in front would avoid the risks at the start and at the first turn," Alonso told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"Up until now it's always gone well, but silly things can happen.

"It's clear we'll now have to adopt strategies that allow us to go for pole. Unfortunately at Imola the Bridgestones, by getting in temperature immediately, forced us to choose differently. As for here, we'll see."
