Motorland Aragon targets F1 testing

The 5.3-kilometre track is due to be completed later this year, before hosting the final round of the World Series by Renault championship in October.

Although F1 testing is facing a severe cutback, especially with no in-season running allowed, Motorland Aragon chiefs are still optimistic that their facilities will help convince teams to use them during the winter.

Their track is being designed by Hermann Tilke and has used McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa as a consultant.

Speaking on stage at the Autosport International show about F1 ambitions, Aragon's managing director Tome Alfonso said: "I think that at the moment Spain has what F1 needs. With two grands prix, a brand new one on the streets of Valencia and the other (Barcelona) there for many years, we cannot expect another one. But testing is an option.

"We know there are testing restrictions now, but we have the long straights. Plus, having a Tilke circuit in Europe, is something that can contribute to our options at Aragon."

De la Rosa said he believed the facility would set a new benchmark for motor sport facilities in Europe.

"This is a long-term project that I have been involved with for a few years," he said. "The main reason to be here is to be a full supporter and a technical consultant of the Aragon project, and it also has the full commitment of the regional government.

"It is going to be a lot more than a circuit. It will be a complete city for motor racing fans - including families that want to enjoy a weekend there. It is one of the most exciting projects that will happen in Spain in the next few years."
