Hamilton hails near-perfect lap

The championship leader posted a best time of 1:36.303 to bounce back from a disappointing first run in Q3, securing the top spot by over three tenths of a second.

Crucially, Hamilton qualified ahead of Ferrari rivals Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa, second and third today.

"I think taking some positives from the previous race we came here strong and determined and in a good frame of mind," said Hamilton.

"We have been competitive all weekend. Practice went well and qualifying was one of our best.

"The first run was not that great but the last lap was as close as I could get to a perfect lap."

The McLaren driver, who could clinch the title this weekend, said he did not feel the pressure of the championship during qualifying.

"To be honest I didn't have anything hanging over me, or anything on my mind except doing my lap," added the Briton. "I was relaxed, happy with the balance of my car, I knew I could do it.

"It was tough for sure because everyone was very competitive, even Heikki, and I knew I could do a good lap."

He added: "I think you can see from our result that we are dealing with it quite well and it is great. I have a huge amount of support from the world, from my team, my family, which is so important for me. I have to thank the team, they have done a fantastic job this weekend after not such a strong weekend in Fuji.

"Hopefully we can continue with it tomorrow and hopefully we can give it our best shot."

Hamilton needs to outscore Massa by six points or more to take his first title this weekend.

Teammate Heikki Kovalainen will the race from fifth position.
