Heidfeld surprised by qualifying showing
BMW Sauber driver Nick Heidfeld admitted he was surprised after qualifying in third position for tomorrow's Italian Grand Prix
The German driver and his team had looked impressive already in this morning's practice, and their pace was again very strong in qualifying.
Heidfeld, who scored his only podium finish of the season in Hungary, finished less than two tenths of a seconds off the pole position time.
BMW's bright day was completed by teammate Robert Kubica qualifying in seventh position.
"I am surprised to be in top three," admitted Heidfeld. "For sure I had a quite a well balanced car, the best we have had and a good tyre choice. It is pretty unexpected. The test did not go too bad but in testing is difficult to know where you stand.
"This is the best qualifying lap I have done this year. If you look at the sector time you lose something in the second sector where you need the downforce. I have chosen low downforce and the car seems quick so far."
