Alonso: McLaren team to beat next year

World champion Fernando Alonso is convinced McLaren will be the team to beat over the next three years

The Spaniard, however, reckons his Renault team will allow him to fight for a second title in a row this season.

"I think this year we will be okay with Renault and next year we will see," Alonso told The Age newspaper.

Alonso, the youngest champion in Formula One history, will switch to McLaren after his Renault contract expires at the end of the year.

The Spaniard admits he wouldn't mind McLaren struggling this year so he is capable of retaining his crown. Alonso, however, is sure the British team will give him the car he needs to fight at the top once he joins them.

"Every season is completely different in performance in the team so if McLaren is no good this year it's even better for me because I can win the title with Renault," he added.

"But I'm totally confident that in the next three years the best team will be the McLaren. Formula One is always a gamble when you change teams but McLaren is one of the teams that is always there."
