Grapevine: Mansell revisits the past with Unipart

Former World Champion Nigel Mansell will be revisiting his past to help his sons on their way to Formula One after announcing the renewal of his famous partnership with British car parts company Unipart

Mansell linked up with Unipart during the 1979 British Formula Three Championship and readily acknowledges that he would never have made it to F1 without their backing.

And as he helps guide the careers of sons Greg and Leo, who will begin their racing careers in Formula BMW this year, Mansell has secured a fresh sponsorship deal with the Oxford-based company - who have said they are determined to make the return to F1 with the Mansell name.

"I cannot wait to get back in F1 with these guys," said Mansell at the announcement of the Unipart sponsorship deal on Thursday. "I just think this is a unique bit of history.

"Without Unipart I would not be here today, and they helped me make my way to F1.

"To revisit the past is something very special - and let's not forget the corporate colours of my Woodbury Park (golf) club are red, white and blue, my helmet has always been red, white and blue and Unipart's colours are red, white and blue. It's now all down to the boys to carry the story on."

Unipart's Chris Etherington said he hoped the company would be able to back the Mansell boys all the way to F1. The firm enjoyed a high profile in the sport in the early 1980's as backers of the championship-winning McLarens.

When asked how long the deal was, Etherington said: "It's up to the boys, but we'd like to go all the way with them. We would like to see ourselves back in F1, but it is obviously up to them."
