Button: BAR Working Flat Out

Jenson Button says that his belief that BAR will not win a race this year is not an excuse for him and the team to give up on the season

Following the disastrous first half to his campaign and the growing reality that his BAR007 is no match for Renault and McLaren, Button claimed ahead of the German Grand Prix that his team could forget about claiming a maiden victory this year.

And although such comments could be viewed by some as de-motivating for BAR, Button claims there is no point living in a dreamland and that the team were working just as hard as ever.

"There's no point thinking we are going to win a race," said Button.

"It doesn't make us work any harder because we are working as hard as we can. If we're in a position to win a race at the end of the year, then fantastic. But I'll be very surprised because we've a big gap to make up.

"That's a little bit deflating. Everyone wants to win and that's what we are here for, but we just have to work with what we have and improve the car as much as we can and see where we end up."

Button still believes that a podium finish is on the cards this year - although he is refusing to reveal when he expects it will happen.

"Podiums would be great," he said. "I haven't really put a timescale on getting a podium. That's not what I've been looking at.

"It's just been about improving the car and seeing where we end up. It's about living in the moment and trying to solve the problems we've got. Hopefully we will and move forward."
