Alonso Under No Illusions for Silverstone
World Championship leader Fernando Alonso says he is under no illusions that he is going to face a tough time at Silverstone this weekend - and has admitted that his target is just to finish on the podium
Fresh from his dominant victory in Sunday's French Grand Prix, the Renault driver is well aware that Silverstone has never been one of his team's stronger tracks and that McLaren are likely to be the pace-setters.
"Silverstone is a circuit where we sometimes struggle to be really competitive, and that's why it was so important to win in Magny-Cours," he said on Monday. "We will be doing our maximum, and trying to get onto the podium."
The prospects of a tough time in the British Grand Prix meant that grabbing the win in France was vital for his World Championship ambitions - especially after failing to score any points in the previous Canadian and United States Grands Prix.
When asked whether the win in Magny-Cours was a relief, he said: "Yes, it is.
"We really wanted to win this race - it was important to get the win for lots of reasons, and we worked hard to get it. The car had new developments, that we tested last week in Jerez, and we knew we would be quick in Magny-Cours.
"We didn't have any technical problems all weekend, and in terms of performance, the car was quick as soon as we started running."
