Button Welcomes First Points

Jenson Button has called his first points-scoring finish of the season in the French Grand Prix as a 'great result', even though he failed to show the kind of pace needed to get on the podium

After the disastrous start to the campaign, which left his BAR team as the only outfit without any points prior to the French Grand Prix, Button finally delivered on his recent promising form to take fourth place at Magny-Cours.

"It's a nice feeling," said Button immediately after the race. "It would have been nice to have been on the podium, but it's a great result for us.

"We struggled this year for various reasons. It's great to get some points, and it's good before Silverstone, so we hope to have a good race there."

Button had looked to be a possible threat to World Champion Michael Schumacher's third placed finish in the closing stages of the race but just did not have the pace to close the gap down after struggling with a gearbox issue.

"On one of the corners I have a problem shifting down from 4th to second gear and it was pushing me on."

And although fourth place may still be well down on where Button and BAR are aiming for this year, with the team having made it clear they want to score their maiden victory this year, the Briton believes it is the best he can hope for at the moment.

"Some people might not think it is, but for us to get fourth at the moment is a great result. People will be chuffed by it and hopefully we can repeat it at Silverstone.

"We have made some mistakes, the team and myself, but it is good to be on the board."
