Mosley Holds Michelin Fully Responsible
FIA president Max Mosley has made it clear that he holds the Michelin company wholly responsible for the Indianapolis fiasco and he expects the French company to indemnify its partners and the sport against any further action in the US
Speaking to the press after the World Motor Sport Council has found the seven Michelin-shod teams guilty on two of the five charges against them, Mosley said the real blame lies on Michelin itself, but the FIA cannot punish Michelin and therefore they must apply pressure on the French company via their partners.
"We can't impose a penalty on Michelin," Mosley said. "We have no power over them. On the other hand we are able to indirectly put pressure on them through their teams and we are doing that at the moment."
Mosley dismissed suggestions that Michelin are the scapegoat for the whole affair, stating: "They are not the scapegoats, they are responsible. They got the wrong tyres, and their teams could not race.
"What we are really hoping [the teams] will do is make sure that what the Michelin tyre company has suggested they do (to compensate the fans) will be done, and also that the teams will be looking for indemnities against any actions that are brought in the United States."
Asked if he believes it would be up to Michelin to sort out any legal action in the USA over the Indy debacle, Mosley added: "That would be our position."
