Teams Discuss Change to Safety Car Rule
Safety car periods during Sunday's United States Grand Prix could be followed by three yellow-flag laps, if calls for a change in procedures in order to improve safety are accepted
Michelin suffered several tyre failures in Friday practice and, although there is no official explanation, theories are emerging that they were down to running the tyres at low pressures.
Michelin is trying to change its tyres to ensure safety but if the teams have to run with increased pressure in their current tyres, there are concerns that safety car periods could become dangerous.
"The situation brings into account the safety car periods, if we have any, and we have asked all the teams to consider amending the regulations, which is possible," said McLaren chief Ron Dennis.
"Everyone has the same problem and we have suggested the use of yellow flags for three laps after the safety car so we can bring tyres back up to pressure before entering the final corner."
Dennis confirmed that the Bridgestone runners - Ferrari, Jordan and Minardi - have all been consulted on the situation and said is confident they will agree to the change.
The teams must take a unanimous agreement on the proposal for the FIA to bring through the change and Dennis said: "We hope all the teams will agree."
