Raikkonen rues Monaco traffic jam

The McLaren star pitted later than his Williams rival on the first round of pit stops, but was unable to take advantage of this because he encountered a number of backmarkers.

"I'm a bit disappointed as traffic meant I was unable to take advantage of the fact that I was able to stay out longer than Montoya before stopping," said Raikkonen. "However that is Monaco for you and at least I have increased my championship lead."

Raikkonen started from the front row of the grid, but was passed by Montoya going into the first corner. He then couldn't find a way past the Colombian for the rest of the race.

"I got a bad start, which allowed Montoya to get past me and after that it was really just a matter of putting as much pressure as possible on him to try and force him into making a mistake but unfortunately he didn't."

Team-mate David Coulthard finished a disappointing seventh, after spending much of the race watching the rear wing of a Renault. He said: "Obviously I could not run the pace I would have liked as I got stuck behind Jarno Trulli and unfortunately he was on the same strategy as I was."
