Berger puts onus on Williams
Williams must take a giant step forward if BMW Williams is to compete effectively with Ferrari next year, according to BMW motorsport director Gerhard Berger
"To really draw level with Ferrari," said Berger, "Williams must make a quantum leap. Just like we had to make an effort two years ago as far as the engine is concerned. It is now Williams's job to improve the chassis."
Though he is clearly increasing pressure on Williams to perform, Berger says he has confidence in BMW's partner, saying: "I'm convinced they will manage the huge step. A revolution is possible."
Berger has also offered technical assistance to Williams. "We are able to offer much help with our know-how," he said. He does not yet believe though that Ferrari can be beaten to the 2003 title. "We must draw even with Ferrari from the beginning of the season," Berger continued. "I don't believe however that we will be able to overtake and beat Ferrari. In any case, we want to challenge them more than this year.
BMW has previously hinted that it may one day build its own F1 chassis in-house.
