Monza day 2: Schueys to the fore
Ralf and Michael Schumacher set the pace on the second of four days of Formula 1 testing at Monza as rain continued to break up the sessions
The quickest times of the day were set in a one and a half hour window in the afternoon when the track was at its driest. The brothers lapped around 0.3s under the mark set by Schumacher Sr yesterday.
Rubens Barrichello will take over from Michael at Ferrari for tomorrow.
There were four red flag incidents during the day. Eddie Irvine's stricken Jaguar caused the first in the morning, then Jacques Villeneuve's BAR brought them out again just before the lunch break. Once again, Honda suffered an engine failure, adding to the five that blew at last weekend's Belgian Grand Prix.
The most frightening incident of the day befell Sauber's Nick Heidfeld. The fire extinguisher in his car went off just as he was leaving the pits, making a mess of his race suit and leaving him rather annoyed. He missed the window for setting quick times as the team cleared up the mess.
The fourth stoppage of the day was caused by Marc Gene's Williams when its gearbox seized on the pit straight, locking his wheels and dropping oil all over the track.
Jordan's Takuma Sato was another to be affected by gearbox problems, while Alex Yoong made his return to the Minardi cockpit and propped up the times as he reacclimatised to F1.
Luca Badoer continued to test at Paul Ricard in the south of France today. The Ferrari test driver covered a total of 64 laps, managing a best time of 1m39.370s, quicker than yesterday's mark. He will continue running tomorrow.
