No rest for BMW
There may be no testing or racing in F1 until the Hungarian GP on August 18, but that doesn't mean the engineers at BMW will be able to take a rest as it works flat out in its bid to get on terms with Ferrari in 2003.
"We won't send anybody on holiday," motorsport boss Mario Theissen told the BMW website. "The new engine is due to be tested this year already."
With 76 points, BMW Williams has a comfortable advantage over McLaren (49) in the battle for second in the constructors' championship, but has some way to go if it is to get on terms with the all-conquering Ferrari team, which has won all but two of this year's races and has amassed 141 points.
BMW motorsport director Gerhard Berger believes that Williams has to get on a par with Ferrari before the end of this season if it is to stand any chance of winning the 2003 championship.
"We've come close, but beating Ferrari is a task for next year," he said. "Only if we manage to catch up the level by October, will we be able to beat Ferrari in 2003."
