Irvine takes impressive sixth

Irvine had high hopes for this weekend as he returned to the track where he won in 1999 and Jaguar's improved R3 aero package helped him achieve a competitive pace.

"We had a big programme to get through today and we achieved everything on the list," said Irvine. "The balance is definitely better and the entry into corners is much improved.

"The new circuit layout is good. It has increased the chance of driver error and from a driver's perspective, it is great fun to drive."

But team-mate Pedro de la Rosa was more despondent after missing part of both sessions while his mechanics performed an engine change. "The first session was going pretty well until the engine decided to let go! Given how few problems we have suffered with this new Cosworth CR4 engine, it was a surprise to have the engine fail on me," he said.

Despite Irvine's strong performance team boss Niki Lauda remains mindful: "Friday practice times are not to be treated too seriously and until tomorrow morning, it is very hard to make genuine comparisons with anyone. A good start, but a long way to go yet"
