BMW confident of reliability
BMW is confident that it is on top of reliability issues for its 'home' race at the Nurburgring this weekend, despite two engine failures in the Canadian Grand Prix
Juan Pablo Montoya suffered a failure while chasing Michael Schumacher's Ferrari for the lead in Montreal, while Ralf Schumacher's car stopped on the slow down lap.
BMW engine chief Mario Thiessen explained: "It was two different problems. Juan Pablo's engine had a valve failure and in Ralf's case, he crossed the finishing line with the engine okay and immediately after that a piston gave up. It wasn't actually a quality problem with the piston, it was due to the operating conditions of the engine. We have taken some counter measures for this weekend and I'm confident it will work."
Schumacher Jr denied needing any reassurances over reliability on home territory. "We have one of the best engines in Formula 1 and one of the reasons is that we have consistent development and we go to the limits. And when you go to the limit these things happen. It's not a problem."
