Button poised to continue with Renault
Jenson Button is close to signing a new deal to extend his contract with the Renault Formula 1 team, according to this week's AUTOSPORT magazine
The 22-year-old Brit, who is enjoying an excellent season after a trying 2001, is in negotiations with the French manufacturer to remain as Jarno Trulli's team-mate next season. Any deal, however, would be subject to approval by Renault's F1 rivals Williams, with whom Button is currently signed.
According to AUTOSPORT's sources, this will not be a problem as Williams is happy with its current line-up of Juan Pablo Montoya and Ralf Schumacher, and Renault is content with its drivers too.
"We are very happy with what the drivers have done," said Renault F1's president Patrick Faure. "Especially Jenson, who had a bad year last year. This year, he has been really consistent all along, and really very good. We also know that Jarno is really very good. But it's too early to discuss our drivers for next year now."
