Barcelona, day 3am: Schuey quickest
Michael Schumacher gave a demonstration of the potential of Ferrari's as yet unraced F2002 in Barcelona this morning (Thursday) by topping the timesheets, almost half a second up on his nearest rival
The world champion covered 56 laps in the new car, concentrating on set-up work. Team-mate Rubens Barrichello was second fastest, also in an F2002, although the team has said that it is in no hurry to race the car. Alex Wurz was third quickest in an updated version of McLaren's 2001 car, while David Coulthard was back in seventh, 1.5s behind Schumacher. Clearly McLaren's visiting technical director, Adrian Newey, will have plenty to think about.
Pedro de la Rosa was back in Jaguar's 2001 R2 and was fourth fastest. The Spaniard, who has been more complimentary about the troublesome R3 than team-mate Eddie Irvine, set a best time of 1m19.247s. Marc Gene did over 50 laps of tyre testing for Williams, but Ralf Schumacher had a less productive morning and didn't set a representative time.
Mika Salo had further electrical troubles in his Toyota and was at the foot of the timesheets. It was a remarkably incident-free session, with a sole red flag brought out by Sauber Felipe Massa suffering an engine failure.
Testing continues this afternoon.
