Barcelona, day 1: Wurz sets pace
McLaren test driver Alex Wurz used a modified version of last year's car to top the times at Barcelona, ahead of the new Ferrari of Rubens Barrichello
Wurz clocked a best time of 1m19.204s in his MP4-16B, to end the day just over a tenth quicker than Barrichello's F2002. The constructors' champions also ran a second car for test driver Luca Badoer. Both drivers had a successful test with Barrichello completing 78 laps in his first run in the new car, and Badoer covering 87 laps, mostly in a F2001, while working on tyres.
Fernando Alonso was fourth fastest in a 2002-spec Renault, shaking down some new electronic components as the team prepares for a five-day test. Malaysian GP runner-up Juan Pablo Montoya conducted brake testing for Williams on the FW24, while tester Marc Gene also worked on brakes for the team in a modified 2001-spec chassis.
