McLaren launch: 'Big step' for Merc
Mercedes will make a great leap forward in performance this year in an attempt to get back on terms with Ferrari and Williams in the Formula 1 engine power stakes
That is the view of the German make's motorsport boss Norbert Haug, who was speaking at the launch of the new McLaren-Mercedes MP4-17 at Barcelona this morning (Saturday).
"We've worked hard since last year," said Haug. "In fact we started at the beginning of the season. We've built a completely new engine which is good, strong and high-revving. I think we've made a great step forward."
The FO 110M V10 engine ran for the first time on the dyno back on November 21 last year. Since then it has undergone intensive testing to prepare it for the new season.
If Mercedes is to claw back the gap in the power stakes, the new engine must have around 40bhp more than its predecessor. Last year BMW was said to have the most potent engine with around 850bhp, compared to Ferrari's 840bhp and Mercedes' 810bhp.
