Valencia day 4: Kimi stretches his legs

Raikkonen spent much of the day carrying out tyre evaluation work for Michelin on low fuel levels and finished 0.7s ahead of the Bridgestone-shod Jordan-Honda of Giancarlo Fisichella in second place.

"I'm very pleased," said Raikkonen. "I've done so much running and I'm really tired, but in a very good way. Not physically, but mentally. I was so happy that I had no technical problems. I'm really looking forward to the new car."

Fisichella continued his low fuel runs and development work on tyres and software, while team mate Takuma Sato, who was fourth, concentrated on developing the brakes on his EJ11.

Ralf Schumacher returned to the cockpit for the Williams team and was fastest of the three drivers present in third place. However, Schuey Jr, Juan Pablo Montoya (sixth) and test driver Marc Gene (seventh) all experienced problems and stopped out on the track at various times through the day.

British American Racing also had three cars with Olivier Panis leading the way in fifth while team mate Jacques Villeneuve finished eighth after shaking down the second version of the all-new BAR004. Panis said: "It was nice to be able to confirm, what I found in Barcelona. I'm very positive."

BAR test driver Anthony Davidson finished at the foot of the top 10 in a 2001-spec car, with the Toyota of Mika Salo just ahead in ninth spot.

Mark Webber, had his first run with Minardi. The Australian could be in line to take the second seat with the Anglo-Italian team and finished more than two and a half seconds ahead of former DTM and Formula 3000 man Christijan Albers in the second PS01B.

Ferrari began testing today at the Mugello circuit in Italy for the first time this year. Test driver Luciano Burti, who had never been to the track before, tested last year's F2001 chassis. He was trying out new experimental components and managed 27 laps in sunny conditions. His best lap was a 1m27.530s and he will continue running tomorrow (Friday).
