Schuey's helmet tops auction sale
The helmet used by world champion Michael Schumacher in this year's US Grand Prix raised £38,000 in an auction for the children of the US terrorist attack victims last weekend
A total of £129,000 was raised in the online auction run by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in conjunction with the eBay website. Each driver who competed in the US GP donated an item of racewear for the sale.
Schumacher's helmet proved the most popular prize, drawing 60 bids. The helmet worn by his brother Ralf, raised the second-highest amount at just over £17,000. Mika Hakkinen's race suit made nearly £14,000.
Indy boss Tony George said: "Our gratitude goes to the F1 drivers who made this auction possible in the first place, and to the dedicated F1 fans who made it a resounding success. The immense generosity of all involved will certainly be felt by families who are trying to rebuild their lives.
All proceeds have been donated to the New York State World Trade Centre Relief Fund. The programme is dedicated to raising $100 million in 100 days for the victims and families devastated by the September 11 terrorist attacks.
