Alesi linked to Maserati's racing return
Retired Grand Prix hero Jean Alesi has been linked to Maserati's return to racing, according to this week's AUTOSPORT magazine
Alesi is currently in talks with Ferrari, which owns Maserati and is part of the giant Fiat group. Maserati is expected to return to international competition in an official capacity within the next two years, and an assault on the Le Mans 24 Hours is thought to be the long term goal.
Alesi quit F1 after Eddie Jordan opted to take rising Japanese star Takuma Sato over him for next season. The French Sicilian has close ties with Ferrari, with whom he scored his only Grand Prix win in Canada in 1995 during a five-year stint with the Scuderia.
A source close to Alesi told AUTOSPORT: "It is one of the possibilities Jean is looking at. He would like to work again with the Ferrari group. It would also be a good signal to his many fans in Italy."
Maserati's first step back into the sport will be a one-make series for its new Spyder model in 2003.
