Heidfeld blamed for crash by Sauber
Team boss Peter Sauber said Nick Heidfeld's 150mph accident during the second of Friday's Free Practice sessions at the Japanese Grand Prix was down to driver error
The German was taken to the circuit medical centre for a precautionary check-up after crashing at the exit to the twisting S Curves section 30 minutes into the session. The accident happened on his first quick lap on one of Bridgestone's new soft tyres developed especially for its home race.
"We don't completely know yet what happened," said Sauber. "But it was driver error.
"It is an important corner and he was pushing because you need the speed for the next section. He is OK, but he has gone for a little sleep at the medical centre. The practice was going normally until his accident, which happened when he was on his first set of the new soft tyres.
"We are not sure yet what condition the car is in and whether we will be able to re-build it or will need to use the other chassis for qualifying."
