Williams takes positives from Canadian GP despite no points

Bottas excelled in the tricky wet conditions on Saturday to secure a career-best third on the grid, but he was powerless to maintain pace in the race and dropped to 14th.

Williams deputy team principal Claire Williams says that although there was disappointment at not securing points, there were still some positives to take out of the weekend.

"It has been a really good boost for morale. Really it has," she told AUTOSPORT. "And I think that is really important when you work so hard and your team works so hard.

"You need those reminders of why you are doing it, so that was really good.

"In Monaco we found a direction for the car and for moving it forward, but we need to make a bigger impression than that. And I really hoped that we were going to score a few points [in Canada].

"No one had any expectations that we were going to finish on the podium, but to finish in the points would have been good. But the car eats its tyres really quickly and then there are other issues that came together to make us finish where we finished."

Although Williams is still without points this season, the team thinks it has started to unlock some speed from its car and that genuine progress is now being made.

Williams added: "There is definitely a step forward, but we are still quite clearly not where we want to be and we still have a lot of work to do if we are going to really improve.

"Everyone knows that and everyone knows what they need to do. We cannot hide from our track results on a Sunday afternoon, so we need to keep pushing and keep fighting.

"We have everything we need at Williams to do that. We just have to make sure that we do it."
