Verstappen, equipped with a new-specification power unit a session ahead of plan after an oil leak curtailed his FP1, has joined the Haas cars in taking to the circuit. He's back in the pits after a single installation lap.
The Haas cars of Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean are first to head out on track.
Green flag
FP2 is officially live. 90 minutes of non-stop action await.
Lance Stroll crashed at Turn 9 towards the end of the first session, but it shouldn't compromise his Racing Point RP19 in any significant way for the rest of the weekend.
The air temperature is at 22 degrees Celsius, while the track is almost double that - 41.
Championship leader Valtteri Bottas narrowly led the Ferrari pair in FP1 despite an oil leak, while outpacing his world champion teammate by some six tenths of a second.

Welcome back to our live coverage of what could very well be the last Spanish Grand Prix weekend for a while. Next up, the second free practice session, kicking off in just under 10 minutes.

Here's a full wrap of Free Practice 1 from SCOTT MITCHELL. Thanks for following along with our live coverage: we'll be back at 2:45pm local time (1:45pm BST) with Free Practice 2. See you then!

As was the case for most of the session, Daniil Kvyat is atop the lap counter, completing 34 tours of Circuit de Catalunya.

Checkered flag
FP1 is officially a wrap. Bottas goes fastest, beating Vettel by 0.115s and with Leclerc third, 0.221s off Bottas.
Stroll has already hopped out of his Racing Point, into the medical car and is on his way.
He went straight on rather than spinning out, so there's a bit of front-left corner damage and a broken front wing to deal with. But, given the speeds involved at turn nine, it's not a particularly dramatic accident, all things considered. The barrier did its job well.
Quote
"Jesus Christ. I clipped the grass on entry," says Stroll on team radio.
Red flag
That's a red flag, with only around a minute of FP1 left. That'll be the last action we'll see in this session, then.
Crash
Lance Stroll has gone off into the barriers at the fast, sweeping turn nine right hander.
Hulkenberg's just had a spark. Not of ingenuity, but of his front wing, which clips against the astroturf on the exit of turn nine.
Verstappen's going to finish this session with the least laps completed. He's done only 14 in FP1 and that car isn't heading back out in the two minutes we've got left.
Ah, just a quick stop for Albon, he's back out again on an out lap.
All but Bottas, Verstappen and Albon are now circulating but nobody's improving their sector times so far.
Russell's Williams is beginning to shed parts. His right mirror his gone. Not the whole pod, just the actual mirror element on the inside. Oh dear.
So, there's oil leaking on the floor underneath Bottas' car. Only about five minutes after a similar problem for Verstappen. What a strange coincidence...
Vettel's now heading out. Does he fancy a run at topping FP1? Hamilton's still circulating as well.
Valtteri Bottas's car is now surrounded by a frenzy of activity too, with work going on to the floor of his Mercedes. He's fastest at the moment but will be going no faster, in FP1 at least.
Giovinazzi's out having a late run on the softs. He's six tenths up on Raikkonen in FP1 so far but neither Alfa Romeo has been particularly fast, only 14th and 18th quickest at this point.
Verstappen's Red Bull is leaking puddles of oil in the garage. The floor's off the the car and there's plenty of Red Bull mechanics at work. I don't think we'll be seeing him out for the rest of FP1, then.

A glimpse of Romain Grosjean's adventure through the kitty litter earlier in FP1.
Hamilton, Sainz, Norris and Russell have headed back out for what is presumably their final runs of FP1.
Autosport
It's probably worth highlighting that while Haas has brought upgrades to Barcelona, mostly aimed at getting the Pirelli tyres into their operating window, only Grosjean has them. There's a smidge over two tenths between him and team-mate Magnussen so far.
Haas team principal Guenther Steiner gave us an explanation of the changes earlier this week.

Information
That's everyone back in to their boxes now. Ferrari closed up a little bit on Bottas's early quick run but it's still the championship leader atop the times with a little over 17 minutes of FP1 to run.

Here's a rare sight so far in FP1: Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes W10. He's done less laps than anyone else so far in this session with 12 in total.
That second flurry of runs is winding down now, with only Vettel, Gasly, Perez and Raikkonen still circulating.
Perez set a personal best first sector not too long ago, though he's still rooted near the bottom of the timesheets alongside Raikkonen in 17th and 18th respectively.

There's plenty of drivers on soft tyres but no real improvement. Vettel takes a very deep line at the turn 10 hairpin as an example of the pace falling off a little.
Grosjean might have spent more time than anyone else making hand signals and in gravel traps so far but he's also been quick so far. He's fifth fastest, 0.992s behind Bottas.
Edd Straw
Gasly is struggling a little on turn in - just had a couple of bites at turning into the chicane. Could be he needs to be slightly less aggressive on the brakes to get the rear rotated rather than inducing understeer
Grosjean decides to do a bit of hand flapping at one of the Racing Point drivers in the lead up to the chicane. Presumably he felt he was in the way, though there was a fair gap between them. Grosjean washed out wide on entry to the chicane complex as a result.
Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, has at last set something akin to a representative lap time, clocking a 1m18.575s on softs. That's 0.624s slower than team-mate Bottas in first place.
Leclerc's cut his gap down from Bottas to 0.182s with his next lap, setting a purple first sector and personal best second sector.
