Pit stop
The first pitstop cycle is in full flow as Norris and Gasly also pit and both switch to the hard tyres.
Pit stop
Verstappen tries to force Hamilton's hand and pits, hoping to claim the undercut! Hard tyres for the Red Bull driver.
Pit stop
Tsunoda, who started on the softs, pits on lap 10 to take on hards, with Russell switching his mediums for hards at the same time.
Pit stop
From 11th place Giovinazzi is the latest to pit and comes out one second ahead of Alonso. Further up the road, Vettel has got back ahead of Russell to take 12th place.
Ah, Sainz was asked to give the place to Norris after the first lap, but gave it to Ricciardo on lap 1 by mistake. Norris did get past, but Sainz reclaimed sixth place.
Scratch that, Sainz has got back past.
Norris has now finally dispatched Sainz for sixth place, having got close to doing so at the start.
Pit stop
Russell, now 13th after Ocon pitted with damage, leads the full power unit change trio with Vettel and Alonso directly behind him. That is until Alonso pits on lap eight in an attempt to undercut those ahead of him.
Quote
"He's quicker than me right now," Hamilton says.
Red Bull has Verstappen and Perez to use tactically in this race, Mercedes has just Hamilton. The strategists will be working overtime to try and unpick this battle.
Pit stop
Latifi pits at the end of lap five and, like Ocon earlier, takes on a new front wing and hard tyres. The Williams driver exits the pits right in front of Ocon and pushes the Alpine driver wide at Turn 1 to grab 19th place.
It hasn't been the start Bottas dreamed of last night. The Finn, who was ninth on the grid due to his engine change, has dropped to 10th behind both AlphaTauri drivers.
Pit stop
Ocon pits at the end of lap three, taking on fresh hard tyres and a new front wing, and duly drops to last place. TV replays show he got caught up in some light clashes with an Alfa Romeo between Turns 5 and 6.
Stopwatch
Hamilton sets a 1m41.250s to claim the fastest lap so far, as he tries to break away from Verstappen's DRS range.
Replays of the first turn incident, which was noted by the stewards but not investigated, saw Stroll pinged into a spin by Latifi who had the two Haas drivers in very close company.
Meanwhile Russell, who started last, made a rapid start and he is up to 14th place already.
Mazepin looks like he was also involved in the first turn incident as he pits at the end of the first lap, switching from the mediums to hards, and rejoins in last place. Latifi is down in 19th behind Schumacher and Stroll.
Quote
"He's sliding a lot," Verstappen reports, as Hamilton tries to forge ahead and build a lead.
There was some first corner pinching further down in the order which has seen Latifi and Stroll drop to the back of the pack. Double disaster for the Canadians.
Ricciardo's all over Sainz and gets a run down the back straight - but Norris dives down the inside and they go three-wide! Sainz goes off, stays fifth, but Ricciardo then gets past him at Turn 16! Breathtaking racing.
Hamilton dives down the inside, Verstappen goes wide at Turn 1 and the Mercedes driver gets the lead!
Lights out
The United States Grand Prix is go, go, go!
Verstappen leads the field to the grid, ready for the start. Deep breath, now...
Green flag
Here begins the formation lap.
Tyre news: all on mediums, except Sainz and Tsunoda on softs.
Stopwatch
Five minutes until we get going at Austin.
Gasly looks like he's going to be taking the start - engine cover's back on and the AlphaTauri's fired up.
Other weather info: 0% risk of rain, 28 degrees C air temperature.
The engine cover's off Gasly's car, so they're trying to sort him out for the start.
Some strife down at Pierre Gasly's car, he looks like he's in a spot of bother with his power unit.
Sun
Track temperature is hitting 37 degrees C, with most expecting a two-stop today.
The Star-Spangled Banner rings out over the Circuit of the Americas, which makes it feel more like a NASCAR event.
We've got a front row of Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, which could be fireworks. Both drivers will be hoping not to put a toe out of line into T1, to Paul Scholes' dismay.
