F1 United States GP Live Commentary and Updates - FP1 & FP2

All of the live updates from Friday practice ahead of the F1 US Grand Prix.

The 2022 F1 world title might be decided after Max Verstappen clinched the drivers’ crown in Japan last time out, but there’s still plenty at stake and many talking points both off and on the track.

Red Bull can clinch the F1 world constructors’ title at the Circuit of the Americas, while the team is under the spotlight following its breach of the F1 cost cap and what potential penalties, if any, could follow.

Elsewhere, Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez will battle for the runner-up spot in the drivers’ standings, with just a point separating the pair with four races to go.

The addition of the giant USA and Texan flags - and I mean they are massive - certainly helps figure out the wind direction and intensity. Remember the gust of wind that caught out Rosberg in 2015? No more of those kind of excuses.
The majority of drivers have recommenced their run plans, with Verstappen out on the soft tyres preparing for a push lap.
With the track clear FP1 gets going again, but the stoppage has rather wrecked the early run plans of every driver.
The replays catch the Italian driver losing the rear end of his Haas going into Turn 6 and that sends him spinning into the barrier. He's able to get going again after being lodged in the barrier but has front wing damage.
If this is an F1 audition it has gone very badly for Giovinazzi - he's crashed at Turn 6 which has caused a red flag!
As the TV cameras focus on Brad Pitt in the McLaren garage, which will be a theme of this weekend, Perez sets the early time to beat with a 1m40.549s.
All 20 drivers on the track in the early stages of the session, with newly-crowned 2022 champion Verstappen the last to head out of the pits. I guess you can do that as world champion.
Giovinazzi is the pretend rookie in the FP1 running gang, in the Haas in place of Magnussen. Is this a shot at a 2023 race seat?
Both AlphaTauris and Aston Martins lead the early runners, joined by Norris and Ocon.
Cars are lining up at pitlane exit, that never happens for FP1. That's how busy it'll be. Here we go.
It is a busy one already with lots of fans at the Texan track, all here very early for the Green Day gig later.

So this hour of practice will be a very busy one, let’s strap in.

Given this session starts at the same time of the day as Sunday's race, today's practice action is likely to be flipped on its head to its normal running. We've also got the Pirelli 2023 tyre test in FP2, which will of course be a thrill a minute...
But let’s swing focus back to the US GP and opening practice. Five driver changes for this session: Shwartzman in Leclerc’s Ferrari, Palou in Ricciardo’s McLaren, Sargeant in Latifi’s Williams, Pourchaire in Bottas’s Alfa Romeo and Giovinazzi in Magnussen’s Haas.
