Sainz: "The crash was properly scary. We're doing 290, 300kph at that point. When I saw everything it was just too late."
The good and most important news is all drivers are OK after the various crashes. There were some heavy hits but the protective bits of the cars did their jobs.
"Very likely it'll be a standing start again" Bottas is told. So, hopefully, that kind of restart won't happen again...touch wood.
But, to lighten the workload for the F1 race stewards, no further action has been declared on the opening lap incident involving Raikkonen, Grosjean, Gasly and Verstappen.
To no surprise the incident that has caused this red flag has been placed under investigation.
So for a second F1 race in a row there is a red flag but this time it is in much messier circumstances. All drivers are in the pitlane waiting for the restart as the start/finish straight is cleared of debris and a lot of broken cars.
Sainz clutched his hand as he got back into the McLaren garage, perhaps taking a small whack. He's currently perfecting his 1000-yard stare in his impromptu debrief.
Absolute carnage. Incredible that Grosjean was able to escape from that relatively unscathed. This red flag will change everything - expect some tyre switches in the pitlane.
It looks like the back of the F1 pack thought the race had got back to full speed, but Bottas in the lead hadn't pulled the pin. Giovinazzi clatted into Magnussen and Latifi which also collected Sainz.
Sainz, Giovinazzi, Magnussen and Latifi are all out of the race as the F1 pack tripped over each other waiting for Bottas to get going at the front.
So much for that restart! Bottas backed the pack up and they just converged onto the same bit of road!
An almighty clash at the back of the pack during the safety car restart!
The Raikkonen, Grosjean, Gasly, Verstappen incident is under investigation but with both Gasly and Verstappen already out of the race it means little to them. But the Sainz and Stroll clash is not under investigation.
The contact between Sainz and Stroll will receive no further action.
Picking the bones out of that it looks like two separate incidents. A clash involving Sainz sent the McLaren driver into a spin, while further back a second incident involving Gasly, Verstappen, Grosjean and Raikkonen created further carnage.
Leclerc was almost baulked by a slow-starting Verstappen, who had no power after the getaway from the line.
In all of that Vettel and Raikkonen both picked up damage and have pitted at the end of the first lap for repairs. Both are still in the race but at the back of the pack.
Hamilton bogged down at the start, as Bottas streaked past and grabbed the lead of the race.
Carnage in the F1 midfield as the pack attacked Turn 2, Gasly and Grosjean collided and went into the gravel while Sainz was also spun around in the melee. Gasly is out of the race along with Verstappen.
That's a safety car after just a few corners, as Verstappen is beached!
Bottas gets the lead off the line! Leclerc gets up to third, as Verstappen is stuck in the gravel!
And for the first time, the Tuscan Grand Prix at Mugello is go!
The drivers wind around the circuit, ready to take to the grid...
Kvyat, Raikkonen, Grosjean, Russell and Latifi are on mediums - the rest, softs.
This is, if you've been living under a rock, Ferrari's 1000th GP. I'm sure some will dispute that figure, and they must be fun at parties...
Verstappen seems to be all clear to start - just a few software issues with that Honda power unit.
There's about six or seven people on the back of Verstappen's car, it's another race against time to fix whatever ails them.
As it stands, the air temperature is at 30 degrees C, track at 45 degrees. This is going to be a tough one for drivers, tyres and everyone else without adequate cool drinks.
The engine cover is off Verstappen's car, is that an issue or just a few final tweaks?
If you caught the F2 and F3 races this morning, there were plenty of incidents in the opening corners as drivers jostled for space. Will we get more of the same?
It's going to be an interesting prospect today; all grass and gravel, with little scope for run-off. Lap 1 squabbling into the opening corners may get a touch messy.
