F1 Spanish GP Live Commentary and Updates – Race

Minute-by-minute updates for the 2024 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix.

Lando Norris, McLaren MCL38

Lando Norris will start a Formula 1 Grand Prix from pole position for the second time after pipping Max Verstappen in qualifying, with the Mercedes pair of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell on the second row.

After a tough season, Alpine start with Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon in P7 and 8. 

The Spanish Grand Prix will get under way at 3pm local time (2pm BST).

Just before the anthem plays, it has been positive to see McLaren pay tribute to fire marshals who assisted the team on Saturday.

One way to tell that you're in Spain - Smooth Operator is blasting out over the sound system on the grid. Will Sainz reward his fans later today?

Adding to the mix of strategy is the fact that four different manufacturers are represented in the top five, with McLaren, Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari all in the mix and all looking closely matched on pace! 

While the Spanish GP isn't often one of the most exciting events on the calendar, the abrasive track surface encourages teams to vary between two-stop and three-stop plans. And strategy battles are always a good watch! 

One change to the order is in respect to Alex Albon, who will start from the pitlane after taking a new battery and control electronics outside of his allocation for the 2024 season.
