Lap 25

"Possible light drops of rain for the next two laps, Turn 17 mainly," Norris is told.

Antonelli is told to pit, and will trade his medium tyres for the hard compound. But it's a slightly slow stop, which will hurt his chances of undercutting Verstappen.

Sainz also stops for the hard tyre, and comes out behind Hulkenberg.

Lap 24

Gap at the front is 8.6s in Piastri's favour, but Norris is chipping little bits out of that lead. Antonelli is 2.1s behind Verstappen, with Russell 1.3s behind him.

Lap 23

Albon is keeping tabs on Russell and he's just 1.1s behind the Mercedes. Sainz has been dropped by his team-mate slightly, which has brought Leclerc onto his tail.

Ocon stops at the end of the lap, having been bumped out of the points, and gets out ahead of Bortoleto.

Lap 22

Norris gets the fastest lap on lap 21, so he's stabilised the nine-second gap to Piastri. Verstappen is already 4.4s back.

Hamilton tries a move on Ocon at Turn 11, just about keeps a wheel on the track through Turn 12, but Ocon holds around the outside. But it's not for long - Hamilton gets the move done into Turn 17.

Hadjar pits for the hard tyre, so even more suggestion that rain isn't due any time soon.

Lap 21

Ocon's under pressure from Hamilton for the final point as it stands; the Frenchman covers the inside into Turn 17, but Hamilton's now in a good place on the hard tyre and he's pushing the Haas all the way here.

Lap 20

The FIA noted the Norris/Verstappen incident, but chose to wave off any investigation as Norris gave the place back.

Stroll stops, suggesting Aston Martin isn't worried about the onset of rain.

Lap 19

"It's raining," according to George Russell. The Norris/Verstappen battle has not only given Piastri a healthy gap, but has also brought the Mercedes duo back into play; Antonelli is within 2s of the Dutchman.

Lap 18

Norris does the move again into Turn 11 - this time, a lot more cleanly. This time, he can scarper and try to ensure Verstappen can't hit back into Turn 17 - which duly comes to pass. Norris up to second - but there's a whopping 8.5s gap to close down.

Lap 17

Norris stuffs his car down the inside at Turn 11, and both drivers end up going off the road! To ensure it doesn't end up being looked at by the stewards, it seems Norris gave the place back into Turn 17. We go again!

Lap 16

Norris keeps a very close vigil through Turn 11 and 12, hoping to pressure the Red Bull into a mistake. "It's all over the shop," Verstappen says of his car, but Norris isn't quite punishing that.

Piastri is already 5s clear now.

Lap 15

Norris tries around the outside into Turn 1, but is shown the door by Verstappen - and can't get any closer through the rest of the lap.

Piastri's already found three seconds on the pair, so Norris needs to do the job to challenge for the win here.

Lap 14

Once again, Piastri is closer into Turn 1 - Verstappen holds the inside, but ends up going deep and hands Piastri the lead! Norris is now right within DRS range of the Red Bull, and smells blood over the second half of the lap.

Verstappen holds the inside for Turn 17, but Norris gets a run out of the final corner...

Verstappen on the radio: "**** brakes, honestly."

Lap 13

Piastri starts the lap closer, and stalks Verstappen through the opening corners. But he's not quite able to find an opening, although Verstappen feels the need to move to the inside for Turn 17.

Norris is now 2.2 behind them, with Antonelli a comparatively huge 4.5s behind him. Russell seems to have evaded the Williams charge, and Sainz is now under pressure from Albon - who, in turn, has Leclerc just within DRS range.

Lap 12

"Stay on the inside Max, make him work for it," Verstappen is told. Norris is now just within 2.4s of Piastri now, as his team-mate seems to have retreated for now to potentially take another go.

Piastri gets DRS again into Turn 17, but he's too far back to make anything of it.

Lap 11

Piastri has another look into Turn 1, but Verstappen again defends. It seems like it's only a matter of time - Norris is going to want Verstappen to defend so he can come back into this race.

Then, Piastri looks like he's going to do the move at Turn 11 - or he did, but the Dutchman's defence is impeccable right now. This is a proper race.

Lap 10

Piastri is having another look at Verstappen with a look around the outside at Turn 11, but he's still too far off. Another go, then, and he gets DRS into Turn 17 - but Verstappen thus dives left to cover off a potential dive down the inside.

Lap 9

"Rain expected at lap 14, heavy," Piastri is told - so that's going to be fun. He's having a look at Verstappen at Turn 11, but he's not quite able to find a way through.

But Norris now has free air, as he's cleared Antonelli for third, and can chase after the front two.

In the meantime, Fernando Alonso has had a spin. He's down to 18th as a result; he overcooked it at Turn 11 and lost the rear. Hard tyres don't look stunning at the moment.

Lap 8

Piastri was in DRS range of Verstappen, but doesn't quite have the speed down to Turn 17 to make a move. Norris is trying to clear Antonelli as the Mercedes driver is now holding him up.

Lap 7

Norris puts a lovely move on Russell at Turn 4 - you don't see that often! Russell was taking a very different line on the defensive, ensuring he was nowhere near the inside when Norris threaded his McLaren down the inside. Antonelli's next up.

Verstappen has stabilised at the front, with 1.2s on Piastri. Russell, meanwhile, is now struggling on the hards and has the Williams duo for company.

Lap 6

The Turn 2 incident between Verstappen and Norris has been noted, while there's no further investigation on the Doohan/Lawson incident.

In other news, we have this:

"Rain expected in 20 laps - if it hits, it will be hard," Alonso is told over the radio.

Lap 5

Sainz overtakes Albon, having been gazumped by his team-mate at the start, with a move at Turn 10. Norris is now with DRS on Russell, but the Mercedes is within a second of his team-mate.

But it's at the front where the action's hotting up: Piastri's cut the gap to 1.1s to Verstappen - so he's giving it good guns.

Lap 4

The VSC is over, so we're up and running again. Antonelli's 1.5s behind Verstappen, with Piastri right on his tail once more. Piastri then powers past on the run to Turn 11.

Norris now makes his way up to fifth with a pass on Albon, and now he's got the Mercedes duo to clear.

Esteban Ocon is told that there's rain expected in 15 minutes - so we'll keep an eye on that too!

Replay of the opening corner: Verstappen locks up and goes very slightly deep into Turn 1, so Norris switches back and gets alongside down the inside. He then finds Verstappen defending into the next corner, which puts Norris off-line.

Doohan's incident was with Lawson, which put the Racing Bulls driver into a spin and punctured the Alpine's tyre.

Lap 2

Verstappen begins to build up his lead as Antonelli loses time, suffering a small lock at the start of the second lap - Piastri's now right on his tail. Norris is now trying to recapture fifth from Albon.

We have a VSC as Doohan stops on track, following contact on the opening lap to offer the Australian a puncture.

Norris, on team radio: "He pushed me off, I don't know what I was supposed to do. I was legally alongside."

The F1 Miami Grand Prix is go!

Verstappen starts very well, but locks up into the first corner and Norris then gets boxed in by the Dutchman and ends up on the run-off! Antonelli, Piastri, and Russell all make their way past the McLaren driver, as does Albon - a disastrous start for the Briton.

Formation lap

Verstappen leads the field away for the warm-up lap, followed by Norris, Antonelli, and Piastri. Russell is the sole driver in the top 10 to start on hards, so Mercedes going for the expected contra-strategy.

A one-stop is anticipated by Pirelli, although we've not had a lot of running in dry conditions this weekend. And there's still that threat of rain, too...

Strategy Corner: How can Verstappen win F1 Miami GP and will Antonelli play a part?

Threat of rain holds off for now

We had a few suggestions that rain was coming earlier. The circuit was a touch damp for the Lego race, but it seems to have dried up in time for the start. Nonetheless, there's a 30% risk of rain for this one, according to the FIA's data.

The track temperature sits at 40C, so it's a bit cooler than it has been in the dry sessions this weekend. It was around 50C on Friday, which put the tyres under some strain.

Everyone's talking about Verstappen versus Norris into Turn 1. If Norris makes the start work, he'll definitely have a go - but he's confident he can make the pass even if the first corner doesn't work out.

But you can't discount Verstappen. He looked really strong yesterday, especially in the opening sector, and so he'll be very difficult to get around.

Lights out and away, LEGO

The traditional driver parade truck for the Miami Grand Prix was replaced by 10 bespoke and fully driveable LEGO cars.

All 20 drivers sat on board, although they could only nominate one driver to do so; Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc, George Russell, et al were all on driving duties.

Each car was made using close to 400,000 LEGO bricks and are in the individual colours of the teams - and completed a full 5.4km lap of the Miami track as part of F1’s multi-year partnership with the brand.

Naturally, there were some attempts at overtaking - as the competitive nature of the drivers threatened to take over. Norris and Gasly even came to blows at one point, requiring a clean-up operation to ensure nobody treads on a face-up brick during the race.

Want to understand how Verstappen got pole - despite initially being down on his opening Q3 lap yesterday? Here's an analysis of his pole lap versus his previous best, and how Norris missed out.

Gasly to start from pitlane in Miami

Alpine has decided to start Pierre Gasly from the pitlane for F1's Miami Grand Prix to conduct a set-up change.

The Frenchman was outqualified by Jack Doohan after only managing 18th in qualifying on Saturday, having been over a quarter of a second short of making the cut-off for Q2.

"We were very far off from where we should be usually and my laps were good," Gasly said yesterday. "Talking with the other guys out in Q1, they all have a mistake in there explaining why they didn't quite make it through.

"I don't really have any explanation at the moment, so, I just need to understand why we were lacking so much."

Verstappen claimed his 43rd career pole by 0.065s over Norris, with Mercedes driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli impressing once again by keeping Oscar Piastri behind for third on the grid.

In Q3 Verstappen drew first blood with a lap of 1m26.492s, just thousandths ahead of Norris and Piastri, which had more to do with neither McLaren driver finding gains rather than any Verstappen heroics.

But Verstappen made some magic to find the fastest time across the session, a 1m26.204s, which was enough to fend off a late improvement by Norris, who appeared to lose his pole shot by bouncing over the inside kerb in the final corner.
