F1 Miami GP Live Commentary and Updates – Race

Minute-by-minute updates for the 2023 Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix.

Sergio Perez, Red Bull Racing RB19

Sergio Perez starts from pole position in Miami on a shaken-up grid triggered by Charles Leclerc’s crash which denied the top 10 a final lap run in Q3.

Perez is joined by Fernando Alonso on the front row, with Leclerc in seventh and Max Verstappen ninth. Lewis Hamilton also endured a tough qualifying and was dumped out in Q2, meaning he starts in 13th.

The Miami GP starts at 8:30pm BST.

A replay of the first lap showed De Vries running into the back of Norris into the first corner after the AlphaTauri driver locked up. Hamilton also had a nudge with Hulkenberg at the start.
Verstappen sets a new fastest lap, going a tenth quicker than Perez out in front, despite being on the harder and slower tyres.
Alonso is responding to Perez's early pace, keeping the gap stable now, which is bringing along Sainz, Gasly and Russell with them.
Verstappen slingshots past both Leclerc and Magnussen into Turn 1 after a great launch out of the last turn. He is up to sixth!
Verstappen has all of a sudden found himself on the rear of Leclerc after Magnussen passed the Ferrari.
Sargeant is having his front wing changed too having picked up some damage in those opening tours. Not sure yet where he has done that.
Sargeant has come into the pits at the end of lap two for a switch onto the hard tyres.
Perez is bolting off at the front, pulling a 1.2s lead at the end of lap 2, so he is out of DRS range from Alonso when it is enabled.
Verstappen has passed Bottas for eighth now. The Red Bull is on the hard tyres, with every driver in front of him on mediums.
It is a pretty clean opening lap all around, as Russell and Leclerc also get ahead of Magnussen to push the Dane back to seventh.
Bad start for Verstappen. He lost one spot off the line to Ocon, but snatched ninth back with a daring move into Turn 12.
Perez keeps his lead into Turn 1 ahead of Alonso, Sainz and Gasly who gets ahead of Magnussen.
It is a very slow formation lap led by Perez, but he is finally lining the pack up on the starting grid. We are moments away from the race start...
The formation lap is under way, all 20 drivers away smoothly, so here we go.
So, in short, the top seven start on the mediums, then a pair of hards in Ocon and Verstappen right behind them.
Tyre news: It is quite a spread. Ocon, Verstappen, Hulkenberg, Hamilton Zhou, Tsunoda and Stroll all start on hards. Norris and Piastri start on softs. The rest are on mediums.
The drivers are in their cars, so just time for any final predictions. Can Perez win from pole or will Verstappen and company come charging through the pack?
Assuming it stays dry, this should be a simple one-stopper for the majority, starting on mediums and switching to the hards to go to the end. But safety cars, red flags and strategy gambles could offer opportunities.
After celeb spotting, driver presentations and the US national anthem, it is easy to forget there is a race about to start. Just 10 minutes to go until lights out.
Now the US anthem is sung by Gale. It appears to be blowing a Gale on the grid, too.
Remember when Michael Buffer did the driver introductions at the 2017 US GP? Yeah, that. But at least this time the names of the drivers are being pronounced correctly.
Will.i.am is now conducting an orchestra on the grid before the drivers are introduced on the grid by LL Cool J. That's F1 in 2023.
Andretti is on the F1 grid... well Michael Andretti is. He's aiming to get a new team in the championship by 2025 with backing from Cadillac.

Just under 30 minutes to go until the race starts. Between now and then F1 is going to be Miami-ised.

The weather looks set to play a role in this race, one way or the other, given it is hot and humid. Add to that it is very windy and some dark clouds overhead look threatening, so that'll add some spice. There was also heavy rain overnight which has washed away rubber laid down.
All 20 drivers have safely made it to the grid and, what feels like a novelty these days, every driver is starting where they qualified - no grid penalties or pitlane starts or spin around three times and go.
A quick reminder that F1 tweaked its grid procedures to allow cars to get to the grid 10 minutes earlier than previous, to make time for more grid activities. We've been lucky enough to get a taster of them... you won't want to miss it.

If you missed qualifying and you've taken a quick glance at the starting grid, you might be thinking, "wait, what?" Key mistakes by Leclerc, Verstappen and Hamilton has left them all lower down on the grid.

Here's a recap on how it went down:

Hello one and all! The scene is set for a very intriguing Miami GP - the cars are leaving the pits and on the way to the grid.
