Updates from Friday practice at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez

The F1 action continues with the Mexican GP, as the season begins to draw to a close after both F1 world titles were wrapped up by Max Verstappen and Red Bull.
But focus has shifted to off-track events, as Red Bull’s F1 cost cap breach for 2021 was announced ahead of practice at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, with the Milton Keynes-based squad given a $7 million fine and a 10% reduction on aerodynamic testing by the FIA.
Aston Martin were also give a $450,000 fine for its F1 cost cap procedural breach from last year.
Carlos Sainz led team-mate Charles Leclerc for a Ferrari 1-2 in FP1, with the Red Bull pair of Sergio Perez and Verstappen behind them in third and fourth.

Hello once again! Did you miss us? We certainly missed you.
First up, we'll level with you. Coming up is a practice session devoted to 2023 Pirelli tyre testing. Will it be the most memorable track action of the season? Probably not. Will we give it any less attention? No way!
This session will welcome back Russell, Albon, Tsunoda, Magnussen and Ocon after they sat out FP1 due to rookie runs in their respective cars.
The AlphaTauri and Haas of that quintet saw their cars suffer smoky premature stops in FP1, so may also face engine changes and grid penalties if the damage has ended up being substantial.

The reason this FP2 is a 2023 tyre test is because it was originally planned to run in Japan but heavy rain postponed it to today. But there's a 40% chance of rain for this session - hopefully that stays away.

If you watch every single F1 track session of the 2022 F1 season you'll end up listening to the F1 theme tune 110 times this year. And it never gets old. Such a banger.
Verstappen is eager to get going, as he heads down to pit exit with a minute to go before the start of the session.

Right, off we go for this super-sized FP2.
A quick reminder, the drivers who didn't take part in first practice having stepped aside for a rookie are permitted to use half this session for normal practice set-up work using the 2022 tyres. The rest stick to unmarked 2023 tyres with defined run plans.
So far Russell and Ocon have ventured out on medium tyres, the rest on the test tyres. Expect those on the 2022 rubber to take control of the top spots, as we saw in Austin.
Huge cheers ring around the track every time home hero Perez zips by. We can only imagine the noise if he wins on Sunday.

The early laps are in and Gasly tops the times on the test tyres with a 1m22.186s.

FP1 headline-grabber Sainz takes top spot with a 1m21.943s on the unmarked rubber.

"Grip feels so low," Russell reports over team radio while running on the 2022 mediums. That was the story of first practice on a very green track.
Tsunoda is the third driver of the five FP1-missers to head out, also on the mediums. Russell remains the leading runner on the 2022 tyres, in seventh but 0.436s off the pace.
Tsunoda goes to inspect the Turn 12 run-off area and pulls back on to the track right in front of Hamilton.

Still no sign of Stroll, Magnussen or Albon in the early stages of FP2.

Verstappen, on the 2023 test tyres, goes quickest with a 1m21.588s, nearly two-tenths faster than Russell's earlier effort.

Perez goes top, to give the home fans just another reason to scream for their favourite driver, with a 1m21.579s.
Tsunoda and Russell have both come out on the softs for their second runs, so Perez's reign at the top of the times looks set to be short-lived.

Russell duly delivers, putting in a 1m19.970s to go just the 1.6s faster than the rest. But it is not really a fair fight against the 2023 tyre testers.

Tsunoda, on the softs, slots into second with a 1m20.798s, 0.828s off Russell.
And Ocon makes its a soft tyre 1-2-3, going third quickest, ahead of Perez who leads the 2023 tyre test runners.

Hamilton nips into fourth place and top test tyre car with a 1m21.509s.
Albon's belated start to the weekend begins, having missed FP1, and he's straight on to the softs. He puts in a 1m22.447s to go 13th and it means we are just missing Magnussen now.
Verstappen locks up and goes wide into Turn 4, but avoids any serious drama to rejoin and get going again.
Half an hour gone in FP2 and Magnussen responds to our calls, as he heads out for the first time in this session and straight on to the test tyre.
