F1 Italian GP Live Commentary and Updates - Race

Minute-by-minute updates for the 2023 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix

Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing RB19

Carlos Sainz beat Max Verstappen to pole position at Monza to delight the home Ferrari fans, as the Dutch driver goes for a record-breaking 10th consecutive F1 grand prix win.

Verstappen will face a two-pronged Ferrari attack with Charles Leclerc starting from third place, ahead of George Russell in fourth for Mercedes.

Liam Lawson continues as stand-in for the injured Daniel Ricciardo at AlphaTauri.

The action at Monza will begin at 2pm BST.

"The car is not turning really well in the right-hand corners, are things all good?" Leclerc asks over team radio. He's told all is well. Still, not a smooth start so far.
Tsunoda's retirement means Lawson continues his 100% record in finishing ahead of his team-mate this year. That's probably the most useless stat you'll read all day, but there it is all the same!
Tsunoda's breakdown means the start is aborted. The drivers will go around again for effectively a second formation lap.
Tsunoda's race is over before it begins! He has engine failure and has stopped at the side of the track.
Sainz is leading a very steady formation lap and given the heat he probably doesn't need to do too much weaving to get his tyres in the right window for the start.
Just like the Dutch GP, Hamilton has gambled with tyres a step harder than those immediately around him. It didn't matter too much then with the sudden downpour at the start, but it could be critical for his race today.
Tyres! Hamilton, Bottas and Magnussen on hards, everyone else on mediums for the start. No softs in sight.
The grid is cleared and the drivers are left alone with their thoughts and final instructions. It is go time.
We've had the anthem, we've had the dignitaries and we've had the ruddy big jets overhead. Now it is time for the main event. There is 10 minutes to go until the start of the Italian GP.
Time for, in our opinion, the best national anthem of the season! Il Volo, a pop trio, sing the Italian anthem loud and proud with backing from a marching band. Bellissimo.
So, will Verstappen make more F1 history with a 10th win in a row or can anyone stop him? Let us know your predictions!
With most expecting Red Bull to up its pace in race trim, strategy will be Ferrari's best chance of taking the fight to Verstappen. Pirelli predicts a one-stopper, starting on softs or mediums and changing to hards, but any early safety cars could open up a two-stop shot.

Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni is on the grid walking and chatting to F1 and FIA bigwigs Stefano Domenicali and Mohammed Ben Sulayem. Plenty of politicking on show.
All the drivers are on the grid with the atmosphere building nicely in the Monza sunshine. There is no chance of the wet stuff from the sky today, with the air temperature threatening 29C meaning it'll be a hot one.
Lawson, still standing in for the injured Ricciardo, has a wobbly left mirror on his AlphaTauri on his way to the grid, so that'll need fixing before the action properly gets going.
It was a Ferrari vs Verstappen fight for pole yesterday, won by Sainz to the delight of the tifosi, but as has been the theme this year the rotating challengers to Verstappen continued. This time Mercedes, along with Aston Martin and McLaren, weren't able to fight at the front - with Merc pointing out why it struggled.

Are we in for a Ferrari festival at Monza or is Verstappen coming to spoil the party?
Buon pomeriggio one and all! The pitlane is open and the drivers are on the way to the grid for the Italian GP.
