F1 Italian GP Live Commentary and Updates - FP3 & Qualifying

Saturday's action from the 14th round of the 2023 Formula 1 season

Carlos Sainz, Ferrari SF-23

Carlos Sainz sent the tifosi home happy on Friday as the Ferrari driver topped the timesheets in FP2 from McLaren's Lando Norris

Max Verstappen - who can score a record-breaking 10th grand prix victory in succession this weekend - was only fifth fastest but found traffic on his soft tyre run, while team-mate Sergio Perez was third but ended his session in the gravel at Parabolica.

In a bid to avoid the chaotic scenes of recent years at Monza, the FIA has implemented a minimum lap time designed to stop drivers from crawling at low speed in order to create space for a hot lap.

FP3 will get under way at 11:30 BST with qualifying following at 15:00 BST.

And now, quiet descends once more. All 15 drivers are in the pits, waiting for one final Q2 push.
"Held up by Perez," says Hamilton, as replays show Perez overtook into the Parabolica before pitting, as Hamilton was winding up to start his lap.
Russell crosses the line to go P6 as Hamilton goes fast enough only for P12. Hamilton had the tow and couldn't make it count.
With neither driver on a hot lap, Russell and Verstappen go wheel to wheel on the run to the Parabolica. A taste of what is to come tomorrow!
Perez was gaining a tow from Verstappen but still fell four-tenths shy of his team-mate.
Back to the track action and Sainz sets the early pace with a 1m20.991s. That puts him 0.05s clear of Verstappen. Leclerc is third.
Medium tyres time! Here comes the field, all at one, as is typical!
The time was set to stop drivers from lapping dangerously slowly, and this would appear to be a slam dunk penalty, as it is a matter-of-fact decision - like offside in football. There is no grey area here!
Concerning times for Ferrari! Both Leclerc and Sainz are under investigation for failing to follow the race director's notes. They went too slowly on their preparation laps and will be investigated following the session!
Your five drivers out in Q1 - Zhou - who had his final lap deleted for track limits -, Gasly, Ocon, Magnussen and Stroll.
Both Alpine drivers drop out in Q1! That is a huge shock given Gasly was on the podium one week ago in Zandvoort!
The chequered flag falls as Hulkenberg goes to P12.
Here come the final efforts! Bottas, Stroll, Gasly, Piastri and Ocon are the bottom five at present. Magnussen is on the bubble.
Bad news McLaren fans, Piastri's time has been deleted for track limits at Turn 7. He is relegated back to P19!
Some drivers may not cross the line in time to complete a final effort here.
With less than three minutes to go, the track suddenly becomes busy. Piastri has jumped out of the bottom five into P12, and Stroll also improved but only to P18.
It's a difficult afternoon so far for Alpine as not only is Gasly in P16, Ocon is P19 following his trip through the gravel.

Somewhat needlessly, the time set during Ocon's gravel-interrupted journey has been deleted.
Hamilton's time is a 1m22.233. In P16 and facing a Q1 exit, Gasly has a 1m22.862s.
Hamilton improves but only up to P10. With others also set to fit fresh tyres and go again, that likely will still not be enough.
Hamilton has fitted a second set of hard tyres. He is dropping like a stone and is currently P13, three-tenths only clear of the drop.
A wobble there for Ocon at Ascari, as his gathered a snap of oversteer on the exit and clips the gravel.
And Verstappen completes a full house to go fastest of all with a 1m21.573s. Perez is second, four-tenths back on his team-mate.
A close moment between Ocon and Norris at Parabolica. Ocon was dawdling on the racing line there but there is no indication of an investigation at this moment.
Alonso now has his time deleted for track limits at Turn 7. He was seventh fastest with that effort, but now joins Verstappen at the foot of the table.
White flags greet Sainz on his way to P4. Unlike in the US where they signal the start of the final lap, they indicate that there is a slow car ahead in F1. Again, expect more of this!
Verstappen has had his time deleted for track limits at the second Lesmo. Expect more of this across the coming hour!
But he has quickly been pushed down as drivers quickly improve. Albon now tops the order with a 1m22.123s.
