F1 Italian GP Live Commentary and Updates - FP1 & FP2

Friday's action from the 14th round of the 2023 Formula 1 season

Frecce tricolori air show

Max Verstappen arrives at Monza with the chance to become the first driver in F1 history to win 10 grands prix in succession.

Sergio Perez is second in the standings but sits 138 points behind his Red Bull ream-mate.

But it is the midfield battle to be best-of-the-rest where the excitement has been found this season, with the pecking order fluctuating between Mercedes, Aston Martin, Ferrari and McLaren race-by-race.

Mercedes currently leads the best-of-the-rest battle by 40 points from Aston Martin.

FP1 begins on Friday at 12:30pm BST with FP2 following at 4:00pm BST.

But looking at this, everyone is now lapping slowly, wanting to find space without losing the tow. Get ready for Q1 tomorrow, when this always provides entertainment!
A bizarre moment between Piastri and Hamilton. The Mercedes driver was dawdling dangerously on the inside of the chicane. That will potentially be looked at by the stewards.
Perez has popped up to third with the two Ferrari drivers close behind.
Verstappen goes fastest on mediums with a 1m22.259s. Albon pops up to second on the softs, trailing by 0.069s.
The word from Aston Martin is that Stroll's stoppage was caused by a problem in the fuel system.
The queue that had formed at the end of the pitlane is released as the light goes green, freeing the traffic! 50 minutes remain.
The session will resume at 17:10 local time, meaning we are one minute from seeing cars return to the track!
But now, he if told to turn off the car and turn off the electrics. This will be Stroll's session over for sure.
Stroll is being told to "tell them [the mechanics] to get out of the way" as Aston Martin "try to start the car".
This is especially painful for Stroll given he sat out the opening session of the weekend as Drugovich stood in for the Canadian.
The onboard replay shows Stroll unable to change gear, suggesting that this retirement could have been caused by a hydraulic failure.
Zhou had completed the first time of the session with a 1m24.755s before Stroll stopped at the side of the track.
17 of the 20 drivers are on the track right now with only Alonso, Albon and Russell biding their time in the garages.
Medium and hard tyres appear to be favoured in this early stage, but Sargeant has gone against the grain, fitting softs to register an early qualifying simulation.
FP2 is go! Stroll, Bottas and Zhou head out first.
The alternate tyre format is in effect this weekend, with drivers limited to 11 sets of rubber for the weekend. This is made up of three sets of hards, four mediums and four softs.
Something that has not been often possible to say this year, there is a 0% chance of rain in the coming hour! Celebrate in whichever way you feel is appropriate!
Three minutes before the track goes green and we begin the hour of action.
But the topic of the weekend so far is Lewis Hamilton's new contract at Mercedes. Wolff has explained the logic behind a two-year deal over nailing the seven-time champion down to a longer deal

As revealed by Autosport earlier this week, the FIA has issued a draft technical directive stating that from the Singapore Grand Prix it is to take a tougher stance on the flexibility of bodywork – especially front and rear wings.
With the team principal's press conference taking place during the break between sessions, there has been plenty of noise emerging.
Max Verstappen topped the order in the opening session of the day from Carlos Sainz. With Sergio Perez third, Red Bull is again the team to beat!
Good afternoon and welcome to Monza for FP2 at the Italian Grand Prix.
With that, we'll take a breather ahead of FP2. We'll be back in a couple of hours for the build-up to that session. Cheers!

At least the engineers and data analysts will be busy over the lunch break, with plenty of laps and information to dig into ahead of FP2 that starts at 4pm BST.
Practice starts are the final order of the session. Red Bull and Ferrari on top but it is very, very early days into the Italian GP.
But our fun is ended by the chequered flag coming out to conclude FP1. Verstappen tops the session from Sainz.
Ocon runs off track at the exit of Ascari, while Hulkenberg and Bottas both dive out of taking the traditional line through the first corner. Oh yes, it is all happening.
Sainz has a small lock-up into the second chicane but largely gets away with it and carries on his merry way. Hopefully there is a birthday cake waiting for him in Ferrari hospitality.
Alonso is lapping five seconds per lap slower than the best times, so let's assume he has a heavy fuel load on.
By our count, the top five runners have done their serious running only on the hard tyres. But here comes Alonso on medium tyres to save the session.
Given there is no rain, sprint race schedule or other track time-eating elements to this weekend, first practice has been a steady affair as all drivers build into the Italian GP. Some might read into that as dull. We can neither confirm nor deny it.
Both Alfa Romeos are back out on track again, with Bottas putting in a 1m24s lap to gauge the fixes to his car. So far, all seems well.
