F1 Hungarian GP Live Commentary and Updates – Race day

Updates from Sunday at the Hungaroring for the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix

George Russell, Mercedes W13

Following Charles Leclerc’s crash while leading last weekend’s French GP, Max Verstappen picked up the win and extended his F1 world championship lead to 63 points.

The main talking point in the F1 paddock has been Sebastian Vettel’s announcement that he will retire from F1 at the end of 2022.

George Russell stormed to a maiden F1 pole position in qualifying, beating Ferrari duo Carlos Sainz and Leclerc. Lewis Hamilton suffered a DRS failure in Q3 and starts seventh, while Verstappen had an engine issue on his final qualifying run and dropped to 10th.

The Hungarian GP marks the final race before F1’s summer break.

Leclerc, with the aid of DRS, closes up to Russell at Turn 1 and the Mercedes driver struggles for traction on the exit. That invites Leclerc for a move on the outside at Turn 2 but he's shown to the edge of the track.
Gasly passes his team-mate Tsunoda for 15th. The AlphaTauri drivers sit between the Astons in 13th and 14th and the Haas' pair in 17th and 18th
Leclerc is reeling in Russell and is into the DRS gap to the race leader.
Hamilton, who complained of brake vibrations before the race, locks up and goes off track for the second time at Turn 12. It doesn't cost him too much with a comfortable gap to Perez behind in sixth.
Ricciardo took full advantage of that Alpine tussle to move into 10th
Leclerc's response to that call is to set a new fastest lap of 1m22.9s which cuts the gap to Russell to 2s.
Slow stop for Ocon as he stops for the hard tyres. He comes out into the path of his team-mate, and Ricciardo slips through
Tsunoda has passed Schumacher, with the Haas driver still warming up his hard tyres
"A reminder, slow introduction into these tyres," Leclerc's told over team radio. Basically, keep it calm and don't burn through the rubber too fast.
Alonso pits and has taken the hard tyre, with Schumacher and Albon also pitting
Leclerc pits at the end of lap 21, taking on fresh mediums to commit him to a two-stopper, and those extra laps have put him in front of Sainz but still behind Russell. Game on.
Hamilton pits at the end of lap 19 and comes out in seventh place - he's been leapfrogged by Verstappen in the pitstops.
Sergio Perez pitted from third and comes out 9th - he'll now have to tackle a lot of traffic to make it back through the field
Sainz has cleared Ocon to move up to fourth after his pitstop and resume his pursuit of Russell.
All that has shuffled Leclerc into the lead of the race, yet to stop of course, and he is looking to go longer on this stint. Potentially a one-stopper?
Ferrari pits Sainz one lap later, but it is a slow stop, and he comes out behind Russell and Ocon.
Verstappen pits on the same lap and comes out in eighth place on mediums.
At the end of lap 16 Russell duly pits, swapping his softs for fresh mediums, and comes out directly in front of Alonso and just about keeps hold of sixth place.
Ricciardo and Vettel are next to stop, also opting for the mediums
Russell's pace on the softs is dropping which is inviting the Ferraris on to him. They are not in DRS range yet but it is surely only a matter of time.
Norris has pitted, switching his soft compound tyres for a set of mediums. He comes out 16th
"Can Sainz go a bit quicker?" Leclerc asks over Ferrari team radio. We can translate that as "hurry up or let me overtake." The pair are split by 1s on track, with Russell's lead on Sainz now 1.4s.
Yuki Tsunoda has opted for an early pitstop, emerging in 19th on medium tyres
Free from Norris, Hamilton puts in a 1m23.8s lap to bolt clear of Verstappen. But is trouble brewing for the Red Bull driver who complains of an engine issue!
Sergio Perez has now made it past Lando Norris, dropping the McLaren driver into seventh
On lap 12 Hamilton gets the move done on Norris, using DRS to charge up the inside at Turn 1. It's double trouble for the McLaren driver as he still doesn't have DRS and Verstappen, with said aid, blasts by at Turn 2.
Hamilton looks up the inside of Norris at Turn 1 but thinks better of it and backs out. Verstappen is now within DRS range of the pair of them.
Russell is picking up the pace to open up his lead on Sainz to 2.6s at the end of lap 10.
"Starting to see signs of the soft runners struggling with the front end," Hamilton's told over team radio for a bit of encouragement while stuck behind Norris.
Another Red Bull passes Esteban Ocon - this time it's Sergio Perez, taking seventh behind Verstappen
Hamilton, on the mediums, still cannot find a way by Norris who is on the softs. Both will have Verstappen to deal with in a couple of laps as he's lapping as quick as the leaders.
Magnussen has pitted for a new front wing and opted for the hard tyres, with everyone else on either soft or medium Pirellis
"No more rain for the next 30 minutes," Russell is told over team radio. So much for that shower at the start.
Verstappen has now passed Ocon for sixth as Perez passes Alonso for eighth
It looks like the Ferraris are holding station with a 2s gap to Russell. The Mercedes driver is on the softs, so more than likely will need to pit before the medium-shot Ferraris.
Black and orange flag for Magnussen - he'll have to pit for a new front wing
Magnussen is running with damage - his front wing endplate is hanging loose
