F1 Hungarian GP Live Commentary and Updates - FP1 & FP2

Friday's action from the 11th round of the 2023 Formula 1 season

Track overview

F1 begins its final double-header before the summer break at the Hungaroring which hosts the 11th round of the 2023 season, with Red Bull still unbeaten this year.

Max Verstappen is on a run of six consecutive wins, and eight in total this season, to push out his F1 world championship lead to 99 points over team-mate Sergio Perez.

But the big talking point coming into this weekend has been the return of Daniel Ricciardo who has replaced Nyck de Vries at AlphaTauri for the rest of the season.

On Friday first practice begins at 12:30pm BST followed by second practice at 4pm BST.

But it is Russell who takes the headlines and tops first practice for Mercedes. However, this session will be remembered for Perez's off right at the start and what costly implications which may follow.
Piastri and Russell continue to trade fastest lap times as the session closes out. England vs Australia everywhere you look today.
The sun is breaking out through the clouds just in time for the end of the session, as Piastri goes top for a few seconds before Russell replaces him again with a 1m39.652s.
Russell nips to the top with a 1m40.444s in the final couple of minutes of FP1.
Sargeant has a hairy moment for Williams but collected the car before meeting the wall at Turn 11, while Tsunoda has also had an off and has damaged his front wing.
Leclerc posts a 1m42.909s to lower the benchmark in the tricky conditions, and then suddenly it is an Aston 1-2 lead by Alonso with a 1m40.687s.
Hul-KEN-burg (if you've seen his hair, you'll know) briefly goes top before being beaten by Alonso's 1m43.277s.
Off we go again and plenty of runners are on track for the final 10 minutes of this disrupted session.
Just before the red flag both Williams posted lap times to go 1-2 - Sargeant's 1m46.838s giving him top spot.
Sainz slipped around under power out of Turn 3 and made a gentle nudge with the inside wall drifting backwards. The track marshals have got him moving again after getting beached on a kerb and he's heading back to the pits.
We were just about to say that the lap from Bottas appeared to wake everyone else up from the pits, but now that Sainz has crashed they all have to return to where they came from.
Another one off! This time it is Sainz and that's a red flag!
Bottas posts a 1m47.787s to fly to the top of the times, while Verstappen is the latest driver to head out.
Bottas might be about to give us our first timed lap of the session! What joy! He's out on the intermediate tyres and splashing about, with Albon, Ricciardo and Sargeant also joining him on track.
Perez and his broken car are back in the Red Bull garage. The Mexican might be getting a stern talking to.
I can tell you where it isn't raining: Manchester. Not that we're distracted or anything. England 506-8 at lunch, if anyone was wondering.
Gasly joins the one and down club as he pits, so we still have no times on the board and very few laps completed.
It isn't putting off Gasly though, who heads out with the rain pouring down as the McLarens and Magnussen return to the pits.
Ah, now it is raining, raining. Just as Norris, Piastri and Magnussen all head out.
Leclerc takes his turn to try out conditions and almost goes off at the chicane at slow speed. It is really slippery out there.
After Ocon's taster of conditions, Sainz and Albon give things a go but all of them stick to one lap on the inters.
Horner speaking to Sky Sports about Perez's off: "It is frustrating to have that off, we haven't got the car back yet but hopefully the damage is contained to the front corners. It was unfortunate, he made a mistake by putting a wheel on the grass."
2021 Hungarian GP winner Ocon is the next to try out conditions on the inters and he is taking it very tentatively. Nobody wants to repeat what Perez managed.
After today the weather forecast is much better for the weekend, so probably no harm in trying out things on the inters. Hamilton keeps it to just one lap before returning to the pits.
Hamilton breaks the track silence as he heads out on the intermediate tyres to try out conditions.
The weather radar predicts this rain shower to pass over quickly but for the time being we have no cars on track. Due to the disruption nobody has even been able to post a lap time.
The rain is falling heavier as Bottas spins at Turn 12, but he avoids any Perez-scale trouble as he was travelling so slowly. Everyone is back in the pits now waiting for the rain to pass.
The events of the last 15 minutes might look like good news for Ricciardo but he has lost the chance of meaningful dry running for the first time in the AlphaTauri. So his own weekend has been made that bit tougher.
Seconds before practice resumes the clouds start depositing the wet stuff from above. It is light for now, but the red flag and rain is set to wreck everyone's run plans for FP1.
The session will restart in two minutes, hopefully that will provide a bit of comfort to the upset youngster.
A penny for Horner's thoughts on the Red Bull pitwall, Perez won't be looking forward to the team meeting later on. To make matters worse a child is crying in the grandstands, but confusingly he is wearing an AlphaTauri t-shirt.
Perez's Red Bull is heavily damaged on the front-left corner and the front wing is destroyed. That's a nightmare start for Perez just when he didn't need it.
"I cannot believe this," Perez says over team radio. He was on his first push lap and dipped two wheels on the grass going into Turn 5, sending him into a spin and into the wall.
Oh wow! Perez has crashed and is in the wall - that has caused a red flag!
As everyone gets their installation laps in, let's round up some notable upgrades on show this weekend. Red Bull has a raft of them: Revised front and rear brake ducts, plus new sidepods and a floor edge.
Here we go! Russell leads the F1 pack out of the pitlane followed by Albon and Ricciardo.
Ahead of first practice, conditions are dry and humid but rain is forecast to arrive either during the session or later this afternoon. So expect lots of early running.
