F1 Monaco GP Live Commentary and Updates - Race

Minute-by-minute updates for the 2023 Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes F1 W14

The 2023 Monaco Grand Prix is the sixth round of the season, though was set to be the seventh had it not been for the Emilia Romagna GP's cancellation due to a weather emergency.

Max Verstappen starts on pole for the 78-lap grand prix around the streets of Monte Carlo, having edged Fernando Alonso in a thrilling Q3.

The sister Red Bull of Sergio Perez will start from the back of the grid after a Q1 crash, while Ferrari's Charles Leclerc goes from sixth after being hit with a grid penalty.

The 2023 Monaco GP begins at 2pm BST.

"The rain intensity is going to be reducing from here on," Russell is informed. He's closing on Hamilton ahead of him despite that big whack to the left-rear from Perez when he came back on.
Hulkenberg is being investigated for not serving a penalty correctly.
Verstappen's lead is now back to 20s over Alonso, who has in turn pulled away from Ocon to the tune of 13.9s.
Stroll is out of the race. Not sure what's called time on his grand prix yet.
Sainz told "we expect rain to stop in two to three minutes".
On lap 61 Verstappen was a full 2s faster than Alonso and gets his gap back out to 18.8s.
Frustrating afternoon for Bottas. He was one of the first onto inters, but it hasn't really paid off. He's 12th, around 10 seconds behind the points.
There's a fair bit of debris around the Swimming Pool section from Perez's barrier brush. Wonder if race control will call a safety car to clear that up soon.
"It's getting to a point where it's pretty dangerous out here," reports fourth place man Hamilton. He's told rain should reduce soon.
Alonso is gaining on Verstappen, the gap now less than 17s. He'll be kicking himself for taking mediums at his stop rather than inters, as otherwise he would now be leading.
Perez touched the barriers at the Swimming Pool as he slid into it. That was close to a big disaster.
Well there's the answer. Russell followed Stroll down the Turn 5 escape road and as he rejoined was clouted hard by Perez!
Magnussen has gone off at Turn 1 on those full wet tyres.
In all the pitstop bedlam we didn't see how Hamilton got ahead of Russell, who gets a five-second penalty for an unsafe rejoin. Russell is talking to Toto Wolff about the possibility of switching to extreme wets, while ahead Hamilton is right on the back of Ocon.
Perez is a useful tool for Red Bull right now, as he will be able to inform Verstappen's decision of when to come in for wets.
Perez has come in for full wets. He joins Magnussen on the compound. Perez is 17th, Magnussen 19th. Sargeant has been noted for speeding in the pitlane potentially.
Sargeant has hit the wall at the hairpin, but has managed to get going again.
Magnussen has managed to get going again after hitting the wall at the penultimate corner. He's now in the pits. He'll get a new front wing, but his mechanics weren't ready for that.
There's just 4.8s now between Alonso and Ocon. Could there yet be a scrap for second?
That extra stop means Alonso is now 20s behind Verstappen. Ocon is boosted to third by a decisive early stop for inters. He was behind Russell, who has now dropped behind both Ocon and Hamilton.
Magnussen is still out there on hard tyres. He's 18th at the moment and going very slowly. Hulkenberg has eased past him.
Replays show Verstappen grazed the wall at Portier on the mediums, but he did well to avoid nosing into the barrier on exit.
Sainz had a very lazy half spin down into Turn 5 and was lucky to not hit the barriers very hard. Stroll crashed his Aston at the hairpin on inters. The front wing got stuck under his front wheels and sent him into the barrier again.
Sainz is back out in eighth after Ferrari had to double stack its drivers. Magnussen has stayed out on hards.
It certainly appears so, because Alonso has come back into the pits. Ferrari brings both cars in too, double-stacking Leclerc and Sainz.
Verstappen comes in for inters. Was that the wrong call for Alonso and Aston Martin to take mediums?
McLaren is double stacking its drivers as they switch to inters.
Sainz spins at Mirabeau. It's mayhem in the middle sector for those on dries!
Russell, Ocon and Hamilton all in too. They all go for inters.
"He's leaving me no space, they need to do something about it, we're going to crash," complains Sainz. Round two of his bout versus Ocon is in full swing.
Zhou and Albon are also in the pits for intermediates.
"It might just be survival in that section of track," Verstappen is told as the rest of the track isn't as wet.
