F1 Dutch GP Live Commentary and Updates - FP1 & FP2

Friday's action from the 13th round of the 2023 Formula 1 season

Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing RB18

Formula 1 returns from its summer slumber with the Dutch Grand Prix as Max Verstappen looks to extend his personal eight-race winning streak and continue Red Bull's 100% record for the season.

Verstappen arrives at Zandvoort for his home event with a 125-point championship lead over team-mate Sergio Perez

After Aston Martin, Mercedes, McLaren and Ferrari have all taken turns in providing the main threat to Red Bull, a major talking point will be which of this number gets off to the strongest start in the Netherlands.

FP1 begins on Friday at 11:30 BST with FP2 following at 15:00 BST.

The primary area of concern on Stroll's Aston Martin appears to be the rear of the car, with the early suggestion that it could be engine-related.
On medium tyres, Norris has now gone faster than Piastri. The two are P14-15 at present, but this is only FP1!
Half the field have set times using the soft tyre while the remainder keep their powder dry.
Hulkenberg is in the barriers at Turn 13 and caused the red flags to fly.
17 minutes remain in the session and, unlike in qualifying, the clock will keep ticking.
Hulkenberg lost the rear of his Haas when applying the power. Damage is likely to be minimal, with only a light nudge of the barrier.

However, there will be concern for the floor of his car after it skittled across the gravel.
Steiner has conceded the concern of Hulkenberg's crash is that they only have one more of the new front wing that the German was running. A decision must now be made on whether to fit that part this afternoon or leave it safe for Saturday.
After the Haas is cleared, we return to action with 10 minutes remaining.
Soft tyres are the favoured option now, with Hamilton and Verstappen both fitting the red-walled compound.
Expect a flurry of very, very fast times to appear in the coming minutes.
Verstappen takes to the top once more with a 1:11.852!
Hamilton goes P2, trailing Max by over three-tenths, but Alonso immediately pushes Hamilton down a place.
Russell encounters some serious traffic through the final sector. One of the Alfa Romeo drivers severely hindered his effort and left him P13.
On the soft tyres, McLaren appears to have found its form, with Piastri - making his first visit to Zandvoort - seventh, one place clear of team-mate Norris.
Hamilton narrowly avoids disaster at the same corner that Hulkenberg spun off a short while ago. He caught the snap of oversteer, however, and avoided a trip through the gravel of his own.
Shwartzman reports "the rear is super-unstable". He is P19 in a solid but not spectacular session standing in for Sainz. He has also not run the soft tyre, so the times don't paint the full picture.
As the chequered flag falls, Verstappen gets his home weekend off to the best start, topping the order with a 1:11.852s.
However, after the session closes, Verstappen takes a brief trip across the gravel. A minor blot on his copybook there.
A virtual safety car test is completed and we now have the usual practice starts on the grid.
With the rain expected to hit later in the weekend, it will certainly be interesting to see how the picture shifts from this session into the latter stages.
Williams caught the eye with Albon fifth and Sargeant seventh while, after a slow start, Norris and Piastri took the flag in sixth and eighth.
Ferrari are difficult to read in this session, with neither Leclerc nor Shwartzman running the soft tyre. Both set their fastest times on the medium compound and end the hour P16 and P19.
And with that, it's time to bid you farewell until FP2. The session will begin at 15:00 BST, but we'll be back ahead of time to bring you up to date on all the conversations from the break!

And we're back! There's 15 minutes to go until FP2 gets underway
Will Max Verstappen continue his strong form from this morning and top FP2? Probably. But what else can we expect from the session?
Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton both had a good start to the weekend - will we see either of them on the podium on Sunday?
Carlos Sainz will be back in his Ferrari for FP2, with Robert Shwartzman having taken part in FP1 for the team
Ferrari says it is now "crystal clear" where it went wrong with the design of its 2023 Formula 1 car, promising wholesale changes for its 2024 concept: https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/ferrari-crystal-clear-2023-flaws-will-lead-to-brand-new-2024-f1-car/10511337/
The risk of rain for this session is 40%, with an air temperature of just under 20 degrees
Green lights at the end of pitlane and there are cars on track straightaway
Lance Stroll's earlier power unit issue appears to be fixed now, so he'll be hoping for a few more laps this afternoon!
George Russell sets an early benchmark with a 1m13.358s, ahead of Pierre Gasly
...and he's quickly demoted by Sergio Perez, who goes top by 0.6s
Verstappen sounding rather irate there after getting stuck behind Nico Hulkenberg
Hulkenberg has been noted for impeding after that incident at Turn 13 with Verstappen
