Vowles on driving Williams FW14B

Away from the track, James Vowles is a pretty handy racer himself - having driven for the Garage 59 squad in Asian Le Mans in a McLaren GT3 car.

The Williams team boss got a chance to drive Nigel Mansell's title-winning FW14B in preparation for Goodwood - an experience he won't soon forget.

"It's exceptional," he mused in the press conference earlier. "Genuinely, after we stopped, they left me in the car - I stayed in there for 10 minutes, just enjoying the moment. It was getting it basically ready, making sure we're OK before we take it to Goodwood, and it's an opportunity of a lifetime. I can't really describe it any other way.

"It's something I saw on TV 30 years ago that never, I would have dreamt to be even close to it, yet alone have the ability to drive it. It's a very light car. It's exactly Nigel's car as he won the championship in Budapest in '92 and it's an exceptional moment for me to just have the ability to be a part of it."

Canada FP1 recap

Max Verstappen set the quickest time in FP1, a 1m13.193s time, to beat a rapid pair of Williams drivers to the top.

Charles Leclerc produced a red flag with a crash at Turn 3 - and will play no part in FP2 as his Ferrari requires extensive rebuilds.

Canadian GP FP2 coming up

And welcome back! We're just spooling up for FP2 in Canada, which will get rolling in about an hour's time.

The team principals' press conference is just wrapping up, with Fred Vasseur forthright on the rumours about his future at Ferrari. "We are speaking about people, not things - we need a bit more respect," he said.
