F1 British GP Live Commentary and Updates - FP1 & FP2

Friday's action from the 10th round of the 2023 Formula 1 season

The Red Arrows fly over the grid at Silverstone

F1 enters double figures for the season with Silverstone hosting the 10th race weekend of 2023 as Red Bull looks to extend its perfect win record.

Max Verstappen has been dominant this term with a personal victory haul of seven creating an 81-point lead at the top of the drivers' standings.

Reverting back to a regular schedule following the Austrian sprint, Friday will see two one-hour practice sessions, with FP1 beginning at 12:30pm BST and FP2 at 4pm BST.

It doesn't last long though as Leclerc moves to the top on a 1m29.280s. Plenty of fast laps coming in throughout the field.
A new fastest lap! Ocon posts a 1m29.319s. Impressive pace from the Alpine duo so far.
He's immediately knocked down to fifth though as Gasly slots his Alpine into third on the soft tyre with a 1m29.828s.
That's more like it from Russell. The Brit moves his Mercedes into P4 with a 1m29.979s on the medium tyre.
Both Red Bulls have yet to run the soft tyre, but I dare say we could be looking at the first sub 1m29s lap today when they do...
Leclerc sets a 1m29.418s on the soft tyre to move into second, less than two-tenths behind team-mate Sainz.
"Bouncing is pretty bad" reports the seven-time champion. Work to be done at Mercedes clearly.
Hamilton just posted a 1m30.352s on the medium tyre, with the car looking like a real handful towards the end of the lap through the Club Chicane.
And for the British fans out there, Hamilton sits P6, Mercedes team-mate Russell is 17th and Norris is down in 15th.

We're into the second part of this one-hour FP1 session and here's a quick update on the order:

1) Sainz 1m29.357s
2) Verstappen 1m29.863s
3) Perez 1m30.030s
4) Tsunoda 1m30.092s
5) Sargeant 1m30.327s

A new fastest lap! Sainz goes top with a 1m29.357s on the soft tyre.
His Williams team-mate Albon continues to struggle to control his car, this time running wide on the exit of Stowe. No harm done but it does not look pleasant to drive at the moment.
Behind them Sargeant finally gets off the mark and moves into an incredible third. It's on the soft tyre, though, so need to get too excited just yet about the American's pace.
Perez has managed to put a tidy lap together and moves into second, less than two-tenths behind his Red Bull team-mate.
Replays show Albon really struggling to get the nose of the Williams to turn into the sweeping right-hand bend of Luffield that lap.
Albon as well has just posted a time, a 1m31.815s which puts him P15.
As we say that, Zhou is off the mark. A 1m32.524s currently the slowest of the times so far for the Alfa Romeo driver.
We're 20 minutes into the session and still no times for Albon, Alonso, Piastri, Sargeant or Zhou.
Leclerc moves above Ferrari team-mate Sainz into second, but both are nearly a full second behind Verstappen even after using the medium tyre.
"It's just like driving on ice" says Verstappen, who has posted another fastest lap... a 1m29.863s.
"No grip currently" reports Hamilton. The Mercedes driver is still on the hard tyre and sits sixth in the times with a 1m31.312s.
And that's the first off-track moment of the day. De Vries loses control of his AlphaTauri with a snap of oversteer and goes backwards into the Luffield gravel. He's able to rejoin but that won't do his confidence any good...
It doesn't look like Sargeant will be out anytime soon though, the Williams mechanics in the process of removing the engine cover and no sign of the American driver in the cockpit.
Only Albon, Alonso, Piastri, Sargeant and Zhou have yet to set a time so far.
A nice, and to be honest surprising, flurry of laps in the opening 10 minutes. Clearly teams and drivers want to make the most of the perfect conditions.
That earlier problem for Stroll seems to have sorted itself out as he posts a 1m30.979s to go second on the medium rubber.
The Red Bull driver's time we should add was also set on the hard tyre, so expect that to come down by a fair chunk.
Well, it didn't take long for Verstappen to go fastest. A 1m30.443s for the Dutchman which is already a second clear of the next best. Ominous...
So much for instillation laps. The majority of the field are on it straightaway for some fast laps - Russell posting the first time of the day with a 1m33.471s.
Uh oh! Not a good start for Stroll, who reports his Aston Martin has gone into limp mode, but he seems to have picked up pace again.
Hamilton is also out and gives the home crowd a quick wave. They'll be hoping he can take a record ninth British GP win this weekend.
And the session is underway with the Williams of Albon leading the field out for instillation laps.
Just one minute to go until the session begins and a queue is already forming at the end of the pitlane. Some keen drivers out there...
As ever at Silverstone, there's a fantastic turnout of fans with nearly half a million people expected over the course of three days.
Plenty of track action to look forward to shortly and the chance to see some one-off liveries that teams are running this weekend, notably from McLaren and Williams.
Clear blue skies at Silverstone currently so certainly no chance of rain for this opening session. Track temperature is nearly 40C, while the air temp is 23C and rising.
