F1 Brazilian GP Live Commentary and Updates - Sprint qualifying

Minute-by-minute updates for sprint qualifying for the 2024 Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix

Lando Norris, McLaren MCL38

Lando Norris topped the sole practice session in Sao Paulo from George Russell and Haas' last-minute stand-in for Kevin Magnussen, Oliver Bearman.

Having fitted his sixth ICE of the season, resulting in a five-place grid penalty for the grand prix - something that will not affect his sprint grid placing.

Sprint qualifying will begin at 6:30pm GMT, 3:30pm local time.

Off we go, everyone on the prescribed medium tyres as part of the rules for this session.

The vast majority of the Interlagos circuit has been resurfaced since F1's visit last year but the drivers were complaining of it being very bumpy in practice. Not that it'll change the bumps, but grey clouds have drifted over the track and that's cooled down the track temperature to 42C when it was peaking at 55C during practice. That'll be good news for Mercedes as its car struggles in hotter temperatures.

All the drivers are in their cars ready for the start of SQ1. The laps will come thick and fast with the session just 12 minutes long remember.

If you missed the practice action earlier, never fear, here's all you need to know from the session that was topped by Lando Norris. Full report here.

As is customary now, just one hour of practice has been completed and it is straight into a competitive session to decide the grid order for Saturday's sprint race at Interlagos. Coming up is a short, snappy version of the normal qualifying format, starting with a 12-minutes opening session to lose the five slowest drivers.

Hello one and all! It is another sprint weekend so you know what that means - Friday night sprint qualifying!
