F1 Brazilian GP Live Commentary and Updates - Race

Minute-by-minute updates of the 2024 Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix

Lando Norris, McLaren MCL38

Lando Norris will start from pole position for the Brazilian Grand Prix after a dramatic, delayed qualifying session which saw five red flags as Franco Colapinto, Alex Albon, Lance Stroll, Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz all crashed out.

After a Q2 exit and a five-place penalty, Max Verstappen will provisionally start from 17th, but could move up the order if drivers are forced to withdraw.

The race will get under way at 12:30pm local time, 3:30pm GMT.

The formation lap will now start at 12:47 local time, 15:47 GMT.

Norris has been noted for a 'starting procedure infringement', as he should not have pulled away from the grid. What an own goal this could be!

Stroll's car has been removed and we're now going to have a complete reset, with the 10-minute warning. Original grid slots are being taken.

Colapinto, it appears, lined up in the wrong grid spot as the drivers (minus Stroll) arrived on the grid. That has only amped up the confusion.

Norris is now back on the grid and the backmarkers, including Verstappen are miles behind.

This is utterly bizarre as drivers appeared uncertain as to whether they should have started another formation lap or whether they should have remained on the grid.

Effectively, this is a safety car start as these laps will count from the lap count.

Stroll is out of his car and is wandering aimlessly around in the gravel. You simply could not make this up!

Mechanics are now running up the pitlane. It will take some time to recover that Aston Martin from the gravel.

This looks like we'll have an aborted start as Stroll spins under braking on the formation lap and is now stuck in the gravel!

Norris is well over half way around the track and some drivers are yet to leave the start line.

Norris leads the pack around but there is a significant hold up on the grid for an unapparent reason.

The tyre blankets are off and the green flag lap is go.

Haas has informed Bearman of rain hitting 20 minutes into the race, followed by far heavier rain shortly after. Bring it on!

However, there is rain around the area, so don't discount the fact that the wets could be called upon.

All drivers will start the race on intermediate tyres, but with no rain falling at the moment, there is a chance that slicks could be seen sooner than later.

Seventh is left vacant following Albon's withdrawal with crash damage, before Piastri, Alonso and Stroll round out the top 10.

A reminder of your starting grid.

Norris is on pole from Russell, Tsunoda, Ocon, Lawson and Leclerc.

Five minutes to lights out! The music has played, and we're ready for action.

"That's [the podium] a long way from here. In a race like this, anything can happen," says Horner as he stands next to Verstappen's Red Bull in the 17th-place grid slot.

On the grid, there is significant work being done to the front brakes on both Haas cars of Bearman and Hulkenberg.

The FIA has suggested the risk of rain is 100%, although there is no rain falling right now.

With the anthem out of the way, let's look back at the weather situation.

In a moment, it will be time for the national anthem and then, we really will be down to the serious business.

Another team worthy of note is Aston Martin, who have had to complete rebuild efforts on both cars following qualifying shunts. But both are, remarkably, on the grid.

Looking at the grid, it's definitely worth mentioning the two RB drivers, with Tsunoda starting third and Lawson fifth. The pair are split by the Alpine of Ocon.

With serious points on offer, there's a lot to gain in the midfield battle for both teams.

Did we need another curveball? No, but let's have one anyway. The rain has stopped, and the heat is drying the track fairly rapidly. But then, there's more rain on the horizon. Be prepared for anything!

The spray looks fairly minimal at the moment, but put 19 F1 cars on the same piece of track and the picture will quickly change.

Highlighting how tricky the conditions remain, Hulkenberg has run off the track on his way to the grid. This race has all the hallmarks of an absolute classic.

So what of the conditions that have dominated the weekend? There is currently some rain falling and the air temperature is 22.5C. With the track temperature only 27.6C, keeping heat in the tyres will be somewhat of a challenge.

Another of the crashers was Carlos Sainz, who will start from the pits due to a completely new power unit being fitted to his Ferrari.

Following his crash in qualifying, Albon will take no part in the race despite reaching Q3 as the damage was too great to repair in the limited time.

After a totally bonkers qualifying session earlier, Lando Norris will start from pole position with Max Verstappen starting in the 17th grid slot.

Good afternoon friends and welcome to coverage of the Brazilian Grand Prix.
