F1 Brazilian GP Live Commentary and Updates - Race

Minute-by-minute updates of the 2024 Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix

Lando Norris, McLaren MCL38

Lando Norris will start from pole position for the Brazilian Grand Prix after a dramatic, delayed qualifying session which saw five red flags as Franco Colapinto, Alex Albon, Lance Stroll, Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz all crashed out.

After a Q2 exit and a five-place penalty, Max Verstappen will provisionally start from 17th, but could move up the order if drivers are forced to withdraw.

The race will get under way at 12:30pm local time, 3:30pm GMT.

"These are not new inters. Which inter is this? Hello?" Sainz is not impressed by the set of boots on his Ferrari.

Ocon has backed the pack up as if there's a restart coming here.

The spray remains fairly heavy but this will ease the more the cars circulate.

The safety car heads out and the field files out behind.

Zhou's Sauber was in front of leader Ocon in the pitlane queue. He has gone out and will join the back of the crocodile.

On go the engines and here we go. It will resume with a rolling start.

The drivers are now climbing back into their cars and we're not far from getting going once again.

If the race hasn't been dramatic enough for you, we're not even at half-distance now!

No further investigation on Lawson-Hamilton, race control confirms.

10 minute warning! The race will resume at 14:02 local time.

Replays show that Hulkenberg lost the back end on the white line at Turn 1 and spun across the run-off area before becoming beached on a drain. There was no damage on the car, but he couldn't rejoin without a push back from the marshals, which is against the rules.

Hulkenberg meanwhile has been black flagged - that's because he received outside assistance. He is out of the race.

A new front wing is going on for Bearman, who tagged Colapinto in the early stages. One of the benefits of the red flag is that teams can change damaged components.

But before that, "I f*****g said it!" says Russell after being informed of the red flag.

With a red flag looking likely, it really was a case of braving it out, with Mercedes and McLaren elected against.

Replays show a rather speculative move from Piastri tagged Lawson's left-rear. The RB driver's brush with Hamilton however came when he was firmly alongside. It would be a tad surprising if that was a penalty.

Item one on the agenda, what are the teams saying on social media?

Doing the live commentary this weekend has been a lesson in filling. Let's put this to the test once more!

The clash between Lawson and Hamilton at Turn 1 has been noted, meanwhile.

"I guess everyone can just change tyres for free now then," says Norris.

The answer of 'yes' is not the one he had hoped to hear. He must now pass Verstappen on the track to close the points margin.

The shunt for Colapinto, his second of the day, ends a truly terrible weekend for Williams. The Argentine simply aquaplaned on the surface and over-corrected attempting to catch the slide. It leaves an awful lot of debris strewn all over the circuit.

This red flag is remarkable luck for Verstappen. He can now change his tyres without any cost and is definitively now second in the race.

Real flashback to 2003 there; that's the spot where Webber crashed and Alonso hit his wreckage. Fortunately, he is getting out unaided.

Big shunt for Colapinto at Turn 14. He's hit the wall trying to catch the safety car train after coming into the pits and switching onto the inters.

Hulkenberg has been investigated for continuing on track after receiving assistance. He's just been in to switch back to inters, along with Colapinto.

So at the moment, we have an Alpine double podium with Ocon first and Gasly third.

Lawson has taken tenth spot from Hamilton with a big move at Turn 1 in the streaming rain. The RB driver is on full wet tyres, so had far more grip than the Mercedes driver on inters.

Speaking of which, Ocon remains out and keeps track position.

Ocon might still be able to stop and come out of the pits ahead of Norris. Verstappen won't manage that, but he could elect to stay out and chance a red flag.

Norris finally makes his move on Russell, steaming down the inside into Turn 4.

Times are now 17 seconds slower than the fastest lap of the race, and Ocon is five seconds faster than Verstappen!

That was resolved quickly - it's a 10s penalty for Piastri for the clash with Lawson.

If the red flags are shown now, Ocon and Verstappen will have a completely free tyre change, possibly their only one of the race.

It's beyond full wet conditions but only Perez is on that tyre. Russell and Norris are both on intermediates.

Investigation time: we didn't see it, but there must have been contact between Piastri and Lawson which triggered the RB driver's spin.

Ocon remains on the track and now leads from Verstappen, who also remained on the track.
