F1 Belgian GP Live Commentary and Updates - FP1 & Qualifying

Friday's action from the 12th round of the 2023 Formula 1 season

Atmosphere

F1’s final race before the summer break sees the return of the sprint race schedule, meaning Friday’s timetable is transformed into a single practice session followed by qualifying for Sunday’s grand prix.

Max Verstappen will carry a five-place grid penalty into the Belgian GP due to exceeding his gearbox allocation for the season with his Red Bull.

The Dutch driver currently leads the standings by 110 points from team-mate Sergio Perez and comes into this weekend off the back of seven consecutive victories.

The single free practice session starts at 12:30pm BST at Spa-Francorchamps, with qualifying taking place at 4pm BST.

Just five minutes to go till pitlane goes green and the drivers get their Spa day going.

Not my idea of a Spa day: I'm neither comfortable, nor relaxed.
Another bit of intrigue this weekend is the five-place grid penalty championship leader Max Verstappen will have to serve in the grand prix for a gearbox change. All the details can be found here.
Some things to look out for in this practice session: Mercedes has a new sidepod update on its car, while McLaren is trialling a Red Bull-inspired DRS solution.
Weather conditions at Spa right now are a bit miserable, but not wet enough to keep drivers in the garage all session.
This is, of course, a sprint weekend, so we'll have grand prix qualifying later today.
Good afternoon and welcome to live coverage of Friday at the Belgian Grand Prix. First up, FP1, which gets going in 15 minutes.
