It's pretty much night conditions out there at the moment - the spotlights are peeking through the sandy gloom to illuminate the circuit.
We've also got Nissany out there on 69 laps at the moment. Nice.
Hamilton does a quick drive-through the pitlane - there's a McDonalds down the road from the track, so perhaps he's practicing for a trip there later on...
Doing some quick maffs, AlphaTauri has the most miles so far with 109 laps. Alpine's got its full 107 with Ocon, Red Bull with 103 thanks to Verstappen, and Ferrari is approaching the century too.
And yes, that previous post was a small dig at ol' you-know-who.
Verstappen, meanwhile, completes his 100th lap of the day in the garage - presumably to celebrate with a cool glass of unspecified energy-based drink. Many brands are available, some more so than others...
Norris set a nice-looking first sector, but the time has dropped off a bit - so he won't be getting too close to Verstappen's time on this lap.
Centurion man Ocon lugs the Alpine up to P4, setting a 1m32.128s on his 104th lap of the day.
Hamilton goes up to P9, on the C2 compound. It's a 1m32.912s, a second and a half off Verstappen so far.
Recently-knighted Hamilton is back on track, on a better time than those set previously. Let's see how he gets on...
Giovinazzi, meanwhile, has climbed up to P3 after logging a 1m31.945s. Alfa having a very tidy day at the "office".
Stroll, bearing the Aston Martin insignia on his skid-lid, is currently rolling around on a set of C2s.
...and I'll happily accept that blame! Lance Stroll is back on the road, while Sainz in the tomato Ferrari is tracking the Giovinazzi-piloted Alfa Romeo.

To take you through the next stage of F1 pre-season testing it is time to hand over to Jake Boxall-Legge, who is to blame for making Sando Norris a thing earlier.

Darkness is starting to descend at the track as the floodlights take over in the battle against the dust to provide visibility. Testing will finish in night-time conditions, so F1 really will have its own four seasons in one day, if that's even a thing with visibility.

We have our first lap centurion, with Esteban Ocon breaking through the 100-lap barrier for Alpine. Impressive running on the first day and still with two hours to go for the rebranded team.

Norris keeps the positive day going for McLaren as he moves up to second place on the times with a 1m31.809s using the C2 tyres.

Hamilton pits and as he is wheeled back into the garage a few Mercedes personnel take a good look at his left-hand mirror and give it a wobble before moving away satisfied with what they were looking at.

Speaking during the lunch break, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff says the early gearbox issue the squad suffered this morning during testing “came out of nowhere” and is yet to be fully understood. Here's the full story.
Giovinazzi moves up to P4 for Alfa Romeo with a 1m32.415s. The Italian is running on the C3s.

Despite the lack of running, Hamilton puts in an impressive first two sectors on his first push lap of this stint, but goes wide at Turn 11 to lose a chunk of time. The lap is still good enough to move up to P13 with a 1m34.875s.

After another lengthy delay in the garage for Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton is back out with 2 hours and 15 minutes to go. Enough time to bank some useful running but the F1 champions will be way behind on lap counts.

That's a good lap from Tsunoda on the C2 tyres, as the AlphaTauri driver moves up to P4 with a 1m32.727s. It puts him half a second off team-mate Gasly's best effort from this morning.

Lance Stroll makes a belated start to his afternoon test for Aston Martin, meaning we've had 17 different drivers on the track today. He's currently 17th as he feels his way around the dusty track.

Mazepin recovers from his earlier spin to post an improvement of 1m35.417s, which keeps him in P13 for now.
Mazepin has spun at Turn 11 but appears to largely get away with it as he gets his Haas facing the right way again. The Russian got off the racing line and with sand and dust everywhere there was only ever one result.

We have a new fastest lap of the day! Verstappen on the C2s puts in a 1m31.412s to go top by 0.7s.

You can barely see the F1 cars at the top of the straights in these conditions. Anyone got any fog lights? Or some flow-vis paint?

Somewhere in that murk and gloom is a Haas. We think.

Lando Norris puts in a 1m33.004s on the C2 tyres, eight-tenths of a second off his new McLaren team-mate Ricciardo, but a fair chunk of that will be due to the conditions.

Giovinazzi on the C3s climbs up to P4 with a 1m32.860s. Solid stuff by Alfa Romeo so far, which will put a smile on the face of team boss Fred Vasseur who is missing due to a positive COVID-19 test.

Rewinding the clock to a more normal time there was a big sandstorm the day after the 2019 Bahrain GP but it cleared in time for the two-day test that started the day after. Far from ideal conditions but the weather can clear quickly.

Thanks very much, this transition is as smooth as Hamilton sliding around on the sandy surface. He gets it squirrely coming out of Turn 1. Looks fun but scary.

And with that, the keys to Live are handed over to Mr Cobb (aka, the boss).
His first lap is a 1m38.227s, which is hardly lighting up the timing screens - but that W12 still looks menacing.
Now Lewis Hamilton marks his entry to the 2021 season as the reigning world champion heads out on track in the Mercedes. Hard tyres fitted to the W12 by the looks of it.
