F1 Australian GP Live Commentary and Updates - FP1 & FP2

Friday's action from the third round of the 2024 Formula 1 season.

Barriers on the Start/Finish with the Melbourne logo

Max Verstappen and Red Bull have dominated the opening two weekends of the season with Sergio Perez following his team-mate home in both Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

All eyes will be on Carlos Sainz on Friday with the Ferrari driver set to take part in the sessions before a final call is made on whether he or super-sub Oliver Bearman will contest the remainder of the weekend.

First practice begins at 1:30am GMT (12:30pm local time) followed by second practice at 5am GMT (4pm local time).

Instead, a driver with a lot of attention on him - in more ways than one - is Daniel Ricciardo. The Honey Badger will be hoping for a sweet result in front of his home fans, especially as his rather underwhelming start to the season is coming under some scrutiny. Here's what Ricciardo had to say on the matter yesterday: https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/ricciardo-doesnt-need-marko-criticisms-to-realise-he-must-do-better/10589469/
We're back to the regular contingent of drivers this time after Ollie Bearman's supersub heroics for Ferrari a fortnight ago in Saudi Arabia. Remember, at this point in the Saudi weekend, he had no idea he would be making his Ferrari debut in place of Carlos Sainz.
So, first up this weekend we have FP1, which is due to begin in just over 10 minutes' time.
Full marks for dedication to those of you in Europe joining us at a rather unpleasant hour. But the Albert Park circuit has a reputation for producing some weird and wonderful races, so let's hope this weekend's timezone misery is worth it!
